HDMI Audio not working -- ATI Radeon

Alrighty,

I have an ATI Radeon HD 6970 with hdmi out to a television. Audio works fine in Windows and Ubuntu, but doesn't in Arch.

I've looked through this
I have tried this with the open source radeon drivers as well as proprietary catalyst drivers. Open source drivers won't work on kernel 3.3 (supposedly required for hdmi audio), catalyst drivers work fine but still don't have hdmi audio. I'm currently using ALSA.

When I look through my audio cards, the on-board chipset has full volume controls but the hdmi audio only has a 'switch'. Tried unmuting and making default output, still no go.

Curiously, aplay -l describes the drivers as "HD Audio Generic".

Any tips?

Here's my ALSA mixer:

Notice the Chip -- ATI R6xx
Supposedly the 6970 is a Cayman chip?

Anyways, would appreciate any suggestions.

Re: HDMI Audio not working -- ATI Radeon

I am using the catalyst driver. Shouldn't this be supported with proprietary drivers?

I don't know where you get 3.3 is required for HDMI audio. I am running the 3.0 LTS kernel on both my AMD systems (HD 6310 & HD 6950), HDMI audio works just fine on the HD6310, has been like that ever since I installed it. Didn't have to do any tricks - worked with every Catalyst driver I threw at it: 11.12, 12.1, 12.3.

3.3 supports HDMI audio with the open source radeon driver. But only on Evergreen cards. AMD released some documentation in the last few days, which should allow extending that support to Northern Islands cards.

Re: HDMI Audio not working -- ATI Radeon

Given that, his post states he doesn't have HDMI audio working on Catalyst either, and the way it's written it looks like you'd need 3.3 to use HDMI audio altogether.
