Such is the nature of Flash on Linux. Unfortunately there is little anyone can do about this as Adobe have stopped supporting it. You could try downgrading, but in my experience Youtube doesn't work with non-current versions of Flash (and the old version has serious security holes in it.)
I find Chromium tends to work reasonably well, probably because it's the one platform Adobe *are* supporting on Linux. So if you're not averse to switching browsers (or at least using an alternative in some scenarios), you might try that
If you're using Firefox, FlashVideoReplacer, could be useful, though I've not used it for some time so I can't vouch for how well it works (or doesn't work).
Not sure where the "hate" of HTML5 comes from, though - it's a massive step forward for open standards on the web. Do you have some sort of technical problem with videos using it that we could help you with?
Hope this helps.

Here's a workaround that works for me, thought some technical detail might be more useful:
Edit /etc/adobe/mms.config as root:
#Hardware video decoding
EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1To fix crashes after setting the above add "export VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY=1" to ~/.xinitrc as shown below as a workaround:
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
export VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY=1
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
...Restart X or just reboot. This should help.

On my part, i switched to using: aur/flashplugin-square 10.3.162.29-1 some week ago.
Youtube and some random other flash-based games, has worked well and as intended here.
Using HW-Accel, nvidia, and vdpau defaults.
Just to add another possible "workaround".
But, let's pray for a web without adobe dependency in the future.

Last flash was also very problemic for me, I couldn't watch any HD videos. I downgraded to 11.1.102.62. Works very well.
Offline
Just a FYI, because downgrading is such a popular sport around here: The versions you're downgrading to have known vulnerabilities.
Not vulnerable are 10.3.183.18 and 11.2.202.228 - click. Some things are Windows-only, but CVE-2012-0773 affects Linux too, and only the two mentioned versions fix it.

Only one that works well with Crunchyroll HD streams is 11.1.102.62, so I don't really have much choice. 11.2 is unusable, so is 10.x versions.

I find this very interesting... Linux folks are supposed to be security-minded people, at least I would've thought so. Amazing how quite a few of them are willing to throw that away for the convenience of flash video.
Offline
No Crunchyroll means pirating 20-something anime series I watch right now or not watching them as I won't pirate anything (it might not be relevant here but I am also a lawyer); if I want to watch, this is the only way and anime is only form of entertainment I have in my busy schedule. It is not that insecure anyway if you use Opera with on-demand plug-ins and only make that demand with somewhat secure sites like Hulu, CR, YouTube, Rdio and the like.

So, I thought you needed flashplugin installed to use flash in Google Chrome. Apparently it works fine without! If you're using Chrome, try just uninstalling flashplugin and restarting Chrome. No more crashes and super smooth performance ![]()
Edit: Apparently not. Never mind. Only works on Youtube ![]()

Hi guys, I have same trouble too, with firefox 11.0 and last flashplugin (11.2.202.233-1) youtube and dailymotion video don't work, I have only a black screen.
I installed manually flashplugin 10.3 r183 from adobe site and it works well as usual... but fro future releases we can hope in bug fixing?
I can't stand with 10.3 branch ever, I think...
Thanks,

I'm seeing this problem too, but only on one setup. 3 others are good. The bad one is a 32bit machine with an old Nvidia card. Has Firefox 11.0-3, flashplugin 11.2.202.233-1, xf86-video-nouveau 0.0.16_git20120210-1, and linux 3.3.2-1. Firefox reports that flash is installed in about:plugins. When I look at a web page with flash, all I see is a blank area where the flash video is supposed to be. Chromium puts a little message in the center of the blank area: "install missing plugin".
2 of the good setups are current (flash 11.2) and do not have Nvidia graphics. The other good one is a 64bit machine with Nvidia graphics, but I don't update the software as often. It's using Firefox 11.0-2, flashplugin 11.1.102.63-1, and nvidia 295.33-1.
Offline
Tried another 64bit machine with an Nvidia card. Had flashplugin 11.2.202.228-1, firefox 11.0-3, nvidia 295.33-2, linux 3.3.1-1. It worked. Updated the software to flashplugin 11.2.202.233-1, nvidia 295.40-2, linux 3.3.2-1. (Firefox did not change.) It still worked.
I'm thinking the problem is in the nouveau driver.

I''ve a radeon card, so no nouveau driver and the proble is the same...

Same problem here. Nvidia proprietary driver, x64, 11.2.202.233-1. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes refuses to work - crashes (all advises above don't help).
Offline
I still have this problem. On one of my computers, flash will not play. Firefox reports that the flash plugin is installed, but where flash content should be displayed, there is only blank space. No sound either. No message about a missing plugin, nor about the plugin crashing. No helpful messages in the terminal when running Firefox from the command line. Nothing helpful in /var/log.
It's not either nvidia driver as I guessed earlier. I tried the vesa driver, and saw the same problem.
The computer that's giving me all this trouble is a very new installation, less than 1 month old. I think now there's something missing. Some missing library or configuration file. Or maybe there's a conflict. Of course ldd reports that all necessary libraries are present. Have tried more computers, all of which had Arch Linux installed on them over a year ago, and flash works on all of them.
Arch Linux quietly drops packages. The esound package is gone. Removed esound from my working computers, and flash still worked on them. Got a list of orphaned packages with "pacman -Qtd", removed most of them, and flash still works. So I don't know what if anything could be missing.

What procesor? The Gentoo folks have figured out latest flash need SSE2, and on machines without it it'll behave just as you describe.
Offline
Sounds like that's the problem I'm having. Thanks! The problem computer is an older computer I am attempting to make useful again. Has an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, which supports SSE, but not SSE2. Video card is a GeForce FX 5200.

I guess it is the processor type: I have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+, SSE only also...
