Wait a sec. Your chipset is an embedded Intel System Controller Hub US15W. Why do you have the drivers for a GMA chipset?

US15W contains Poulsbo aka GMA500 graphics. Which is a big pain in the behind. The in-kernel gma500 driver is modesetting-only, no userspace driver for it, so you either use xf86-video-fbdev or xf86-video-modesetting with it. Of course there's no acceleration with those.

Then there's some closed drivers. But those only work with specific old versions of the kernel and X. Good luck getting that working. And I really mean that. Search AUR for poulsbo, there's some stuff there.

Yes, I've read plenty of concerns about the Poulsbo....unfortunately, that's what the U820 uses....

I assume that now that I'm able to open up some X windows and terminal, I'll be able to move forward with finishing setting up my U820 and be able to use AUR....

Well, it seems that I spoke too soon......

Seemed like everything was working well including LXDE....

I rebooted today and now I noticed a warning message as it was booting up...

Haven't figured out how to fix....related to X again...

Got message:

warning: module psb not found

So, now I can't start X and LXDE.....

Assume that either something about configuration settings did not persist after rebooting or something else changed....

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I did install a few programs such as conky, notecase pro, etc....and notecase pro needs some libs from openssl....so, installed that...

UPDATE....just remembered that I also installed 'packer' too....

Just noticed another message while booting....

Something like:

yenta_cardbus....    No cardbus resourse! ...
loremap error.... requested 0x....., got 0..... (something like this....goes by so fast...)

Meanwhile, here's some content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Parse error on line 1 of section InputClass in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Driver is not a valid keyword in this section.

(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config file

Fatal server error:
No screens found

Strange as I don't have a xorg.conf file!......can't find it in the X11 directory.....only have xinit and xorg.conf.d directories in that directory...

Just checked my xinitrc file in xinit and noticed a line with 'twm &' in it, changed it to 'lxde'....rebooted and then tried starting LXDE and voila! it opened this time.....rebooted and tried it again and it works..

So, while this appears to be good news, I don't understand why I have all the other error messages now....any suggestions as to how to fix?

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Installd Arch -But Can't Get X Runn'g-HowToSetupNetConn?

The psb_gfx module is renamed as of kernel 3.3-rc1. You should rename any instance of it to gma500_gfx.

(And please, consider assisting with updating the poulsbo wiki-page, as it is getting dusty real fast)

Thanks for the suggestion......

I checked my 'rc.conf' file and there was a line in the HARDWARE>MODULES section that had a reference to 'psb'. So, changed it to 'gma500_gfx'. Rebooted and voila! was able to open LXDE again.... smile

(And please, consider assisting with updating the poulsbo wiki-page, as it is getting dusty real fast)

OK, wll see about that.....

Meanwhile, two more things and then I think my setup will be in very good shape for me to use daily...

A.  Networking - Ethernet

I found that I had to enter in all the IP address info in 'rc.conf' in order to get ethernet connection working when I'm connected at my workplace network. Then it connected OK...

When I come home it doesn't connect I assume because eth0 is populated with the workplace IP address info.

So, instead of deleting that info and then connecting at home with dhcp, I assume that I should be setting up another ethernet connection in rc.conf, such as eth1, correct?

Any examples or suggestions (or other programs as to best way to do this?

B.  USB Flash Drives

I tried connecting my USB Flash Drive but I get error message in a window that pops up onscreen that says 'Not Authorized'. My drive is not write protected.

Is this something that Arch it doing for security reasons or ?

How can I get my flash drive working?

Thanks!

According to the wiki, you should start LXDE with

exec ck-launch-session startlxde

in your ~/.xinitrc

No, eth1 refers to the second network card in your machine.
You should use netcfg instead of network if you need multiple different configrations to connect.  net-profiles will be useful for you.

However, I didn't have a .xinitrc file. But I just created one now and put that line in there...

Rebooted but I'm back at console login.

So, now that I have that file, what do I type at prompt to start lxde. read wiki, but it's not clear to me what to type now?

Thanks.

You can use something like slim or lxdm to log in to lxde after the computer boots.

Slim uses the .xinitrc to start x, not sure about lxdm as I have not used it.

Post the contents of your ~/xinitrc
Check to make sure you have consolekit installed

Just says 'exec ck-launch-session startlxde'

That's it....as noted in an earlier post I didn't have a '.xinitrc' file until you suggested that I have this command it that file...so, I created a '.xinitrc' file and put that one line in it....that is only line in that file.

I have consolekit installed.

Re: [SOLVED] Installd Arch -But Can't Get X Runn'g-HowToSetupNetConn?

UPDATE

I followed instructions on the SLiM page

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SLiM

and created a new '.xinitrc' file by copying the skeleton file referred to. Then edited it per the instructions and included 'dbus-launch' in the command too.

Then updated my '/etc/rc.conf' file to add 'dbus-launch' to my DAEMONS section.

Rebooted and voila! when I did 'startx' it worked this time and opened up lxde.

Also, now, I am able to use a USB Flash Drive successfully.

Thanks for all the help so far from everyone. I truly appreciate it and would not have gotten this far with Arch without it.

Now, I just need to get my networking sorted out for home and office networks (per my earlier posts...) and I should be in good shape....
