Hello,
I've got a widescreen monitor, and am feeling the urge to destroy anything that could steal vertical space.
Already moved the panel to the left, now the only thing left is the window decoration.
Is there any window manager that supports placing the window decorations on a side, instead of on top?

KWin and Openbox come to mind. I seem to recall either Fluxbox or PekWM allowing it also.

I know that possible with FVWM. IDK how to do that, but certainly want to know.

Yup, that screenshot shows exactly what i'd love to get... Configuring FVMW looks like a mess though, and couldn't find how to set the titlebar on a side

Could you give us some hints on how to configure those WMs to have a lateral titlebar?

e17 Allows for this sort of configuration out of the box using simple GUIs.

I don't think it is possible in Openbox. In KDE4 you'll need Bespin, there is an option that makes this possible. Any other way to do this?

I'm giving e17 the first shot, since FLWM and WM2 don't have a modern aspect, and I'm not using KDE.
Can't find the option you wrote about though, where am I supposed to find it?

I testify that configuring FVWM is, indeed, a mess. FVWM sure is powerful and stable, but after two weeks of getting nowhere, I gave up trying to learn how to configure it.

You want to configure a shelf for yourself. You'll put a menu bar in there, any gadgets you want (such as a workspace selector) and a system tray, which is an ibar module in e17. When I used e17, I spent a lot of time on the Bodhi Linux site, since they by far have the best documentation on it.

Uh?
Wait...
Any major desktop environment lets you put the shelves/docks/panels wherever you want.
I'm looking for a window manager that draws the title bar on a side of the windows, instead of on top of them.

It works!
It not very configurable, but it looks like Bespin is the only modern WM that supports vertical titlebars.
I think I'll try switching to KDE instead of just running kwin. I'm sick of Gnome3 anyway...

Oh sorry. I completely misunderstood. Sorry about that! [/embarassed]

yes it is possible, and is kind of simple i think. look at the man page (surprise) and search for 'Window title' at around line 5560. here is what i have in my .fvwm2rc
Style * TitleAtLeft
you might also want to (or not) to rotate the title, and the title-decoration i.e.
Style * LeftTitleRotatedCCW
Style * UseTitleDecorRotation
edit-1 : i think it would be *really* nice if the length of the title-bar could be made configurable somehow, something similar to beos decorations iirc.
kind regards

Sawfish can do this, too, at least in the git version.

oh, that is good to know. i played with sawfish a very looong time ago, but finally discovered (rather gathered the courage to tackle) fvwm. haven't looked back since. btw, do you know if sawfish supports partial title-bars ?

I totally agree! I had a thread about setting up a desktop like that a while ago: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=103928
I couldn't make Arch Linux behave like Haiku, so I just installed Haiku instead and now dual boot.

please do let me know if you are looking for the relevant configuration. i have been meaning to put it up on github for a long time, and this would be just the trigger that i need. fwiw, i have a slightly brutalized configuration from tavis-ormandy to suit my needs.

With a patch, it's possible,
