I'm trying to activate software for which it needs to connect to the internet. Unfortunately it can only use eth0 to do this. My interface is called lo and so i wish to change it to eth0, how do i go about doing this? I already try'd to add udev rules to do this but with no success.
Thanks in advance,
Tamis

lo is the internal system device and should never be changed. Simply ; your eth0 is missing, if you have a wired network card, that is. Driver problems?

Just so I understand this correctly. You're trying to use some piece of software which is hardcoded to connect to the internet by using the eth0 interface? And the only interface you have (output of "ip link") is lo?
If so, then you don't have any network set up on the box at all (lo is your local loopback).

My point exactly!

tamis, no offense, but did you not notice that the absence of eth0 resulted in complete lack of network connection? Is this software activation the very first online activity that you have attempted on this particular computer?

I have a Asus ux31 which doesn't have an ethernet port. I do have wireless and a wlan0 device tho so yes i do have internet. Is it possible to temporarily change wlan0 to eth0?

OK - that's a bit clearer.
Why can't this mysterious software use wlan0? In fact, why does it even care about the interface? Applications don't need to bother with low-level stuff like that.

The activation of both Matlab and Maple need eth0. Why they did it this way i don't know.

What exactly is occurring when you try to authenticate it? It's been a while since I installed it, but I didn't have a problem installing maple and using wlan0

Now that's something completely different, but you should have no trouble connecting to a license server over whatever network connection you have available.

tamis: You can set the device name for the interface with a udev rule. Have a look at the examples here.
Would be interesting, if symlinking eth0 to wlan0 works also in your case.
