anyone, any ideas why smbd is not outputting a version code?

Just for the record, im having the same problem. -V option doesnt show the version number and webmin displays the same error.

how do i install the previous version of samba for now then?

Look in your cache /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ to see if it's still there. If so, install it with
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/<pkgname>

I have the same problem untill yesterday - but
Pacman -Sy samba took care of all the problems for me.. Without erasing my conf. files
Just getting better .... All the time
