By the way is it somehow related?

I've googled a bit and came with a solution which gives us some insights
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/rebooting-magic-way

Seems something is not properly unmounting.

SO you can for it with:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger

Forcing a shut down, still no clear way out of it. Ideas?

Maybe it's a long shot, but try to update your BIOS.

Re: Shutdown and reboot not working

Cerbereus and vfbsilva, post your fstab. Let's see how you're mounting those drives.

Also, you guys should probably run an fsck.

Re: Shutdown and reboot not working

@Cerbereus

So is sda a supposed to be a removable usb drive and sdb your root drive?

It would probably be better to use UUIDs or disk labels in fstab rather than e.g. /dev/sdb* since these can change, I believe. Also, I think the home line should end in "2" rather than "1" (but that is probably not causing any problems).

Well I think the answer is no it is a local machine should I remove the daemon from my daemons array?

A thing I've noticed is for some reason /dev/sdb5 which is my /boot partition in another harddisk keeps mounted after the boot process which was not the previous behaviour as far as I can remmember. I googled a bit and found no reasons to make it noauto. Can it be related to the problem?

Hi,

I'm having the same problem both in my desktop and my laptop. Downgrading to kernel 3.3.7 makes it possible to reboot and shutdown the machines.

My old kernel is not in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ anymore.
what do you suggest me to do folks? Can I just download it from the website? Just checked http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/x86_64/linux/ but they don't link the old versions, What can I do?

There is a kernel upgrade soon because is in testing maybe today i will check later try to install the kernel of testing or decide to wait  and see if this fix my problem is good to know that more people is with the same problems.
Cfr sda is another hard drive with windows 7 , right now i don' t have clue they use it as usb, since the last upgrade a lot of thing change without notice until now. if is physical hard drive how I must be configure it, sdb is my root hard drive of linux.
Thanks for all the help.

Hi. Same problem for me, shutdown/reboot fails since upgrade to 3.3.8-1. I got a pretty much vanilla configuration. My rc.conf

I did a mess, a kernel downgrade, downloaded kernel 3.3.7 from arch time machine and did pacman -U kernel26-2.6.39.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
System rebuilt modules and so on. After reboot it seems to report my /boot is not a valid partition type with ext2fs. Still grub which is installed there works and I can boot my windows.
My plan now is download a live cd do a chroot to my old arch and try to update the kernel for the old state is it manageable?

P.S. cool to see I'm not alone smile tongue

I doubt it. You have told fstab to mount it with default options so it will be mounted. Unless you sometime later have added a command to unmount it? I'm kind of surprised it wasn't mounted by default anyway, though, so maybe I'm wrong and it makes a difference it is on another disk.

I was facing the very same problem and could fix it with a downgrade. What I did was the following:

1. Search the ARM for linux in your architecture (was x86_64 for me).
2. Find the 3.3.7-1 kernel and download it (for me this). I also downloaded the signature file, don't know if needed, though.
3. use pacman -U <dowloaded-file> to install it (here pacman -U linux-3.3.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz). It will (of course) call mkinitcpio to create the initial ram disk.

This worked without problems and now everything runs (or better: shuts down wink) again. Thanks for the downgrade pointer.

Cheers,
mtg

Re: Shutdown and reboot not working

vfbsilva, well i search in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ so there was, i search for the previous one(linux 3.3.7-1)  so far didn't broke anything even the system boot faster as before and shutdown without a problem, if you don't have in that directory try the way of min_the_gap that is the same, I think. Hope everyone fix this problem smile .

For me it did not work, I'm clueless. it reports a problem reading /boot partition saying something about it being not a valid ext2 partition. I need to take a picture of that as it hangs before init 1 so I have no logs.  I was able to chroot and revert to 3.3.8-1 kernel. Also, is there a procedure I can use to have multiple kernels? Well of course it is, better question is wheter https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ild_System is the best approach to do so. I still clueless about what is the problem.

I will try to build my kernel again and see what happens. By the way so far I've used only vanilla kernels.
