I've used Dansguardian for many years with Squid and with other proxy servers (most recently with Polipo). I installed it on Arch for the first time recently and it pulled in Squid as a dependancy with I thought rather strange since it works equally well with almost any proxy. The most recent packager (not the maintainer) thinks that it might be because of the 'proxy' user that Squid creates and DG uses for its child processes.
I don't like the idea of having a big package like Squid pulled in unnecessarily like that, so I wonder if there's another way to handle things. Would it be possible to do something with 'provides' in the PKGBUILDS of proxy servers like
"provides=('proxy_server')"so that a filter like DG can just have 'proxy_server' as a dependancy?
Are there other options here that will allow me to Keep It Simple on my server if I want to. DG needs a proxy server, so one needs to be installed, but there must be a more elegant way to handle this.
