Problems with ipw2200 wireless adaptor

I have a laptop with an Intel PRO/Wireless  2200BG wireless network connection, using the ipw2200 driver (from the output of lshw).
Executing 

iwlist eth1 scan

I do see my wireless network, among several others.
The problem is that when I do 

wpa_supplicant -i eth1 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext

I cannot connect: it looks like it is trying, but it doesn't manage; I get messages

Associated with 7c:4f:b5:18:a5:a4
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=7c:4f:b5:18:a5:a4 reason=0

Running it with -d gives some information, but I don't know what it means:

EAPOL: Supplicant port status: Unauthorized

and later

Added BSSID 7c:4f:b5:18:a5:a4 into blacklist

and much more.
I run Ubuntu (10.10 with kernel 2.6.35) on the same computer, and the wireless runs perfectly. The driver and firmware versions are the same as on my arch installation with kernel 3.4.4.
Does anyone have any idea of what I could try next?

Post the full debug output, just a few messages out of context don't say much useful.

Are you sure you have the firmware package for the ipw2200 installed?
I rarely use wpa_supplicant, it's not the only way to do it:  I use wicd.
How about doing ifconfig and verifying that eth1 actually is your interface?  Usually this should be wlanxx.
Try the steps manually:
iwconfig xxxx essid xxxxx enc xxxxxxxxxx
dhcpcd xxxx

In fact my interface sometimes changes after reboot: sometimes it is eth0 and sometimes eth1 (but nothing anything else).

Yeah, it depends on which module (wired or wireless) loads first, and there's no guarantee it'll be the same one on every boot. My advice would be to give the wireless card a persistent name of "wlan0". You do that with udev rules, check the wiki, it has info on that.

As to your connection issues... what's your /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and are you sure it's correct? Your debug output shows you get associated, but then something goes wrong and I can't tell exactly what. This is the relevant part, I think:

My wpa_supplicant.conf is the following:

but I also tried many variants, mainly the same thing with several lines missing.
On the other hand, I tried using wicd, and that does work!

Well, since wicd works, the issue is definitely in your config file.

You sure WPA is the correct proto and not maybe RSN? It's best to just drop this stuff, wpa_supplicant can figure it out by itself, all you need to provide is the ssid and psk. Also, I'm not sure about the impact of those settings above the network block. ap_scan=0 is the default, which means the driver takes care of a bunch of stuff, including association. Since you have association problems, setting this to 1 could be the source of them.

Actually the first conf I tried was just the ssid and psk (as output by wpa_passphrase). The other settings are from the default configuration file that came with my Arch linux installation...
