hostname confusion with router

Desktop and laptop both running Arch, recently updated
Internet connection thru Comcast wireless router

Everything is working fine until....

((I think)) the problems started when I installed ssh on both machines--at the same time, I changed the hostname on one of them.

Even though both machines would connect to the router---AND the router diagnostics showed the outside connection was working---I could not get out the the net. The problem was eventually resolved by re-booting the router with factory defaults.

In the process, I noted that the router showed the desktop with the old hostname. Now--after rebooting everything, it still shows the old name. /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.d both have the new name, and "hostname" gives the new name. The router admin page still shows the old name.

I'll guess that dns info gets stored in the router, but why would that not get reset when re-booting everything?

I'll really appreciate learning that I'm missing something really simple...;)

As you did a factory reset, maybe will you need to set up correctly the NAT and forward ssh with the corresponding port to your machines?

It could be that the router resets only its configuration settings to factory defaults, while trying to be of service by retaining its old DHCP mappings. Maybe you could try releasing your lease via the router management interface. If that's not possible, you can release your lease client side. See if that "freshens up" the memory of the router.
