Here's a really weird problem...
I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop, both of which connect to the router using wireless, both using wicd. Both have and have had the same firewall software on them: first vuurmuur (which doesn't like being started before there is a connection), then ufw (which worked fine until a few weeks ago), then firestarter (same problem as vuurmuur, and new problem not solved), and now shorewall (using the "Universal" configuration, new problem still not solved). There's also another computer in the network, which isn't mine, which runs some version of ubuntu and is connected using wire.
The desktop and the ubuntu box both serve ssh, the laptop does not.
Both the laptop and the desktop can ssh and ping the ubuntu box without problems.
The desktop can ping the laptop without problems (I haven't tested pinging it from the ubuntu box).
Both the laptop and the ubuntu box can NOT ssh or ping the desktop until the desktop has sent a ping to them.
So, it seems there is some error in the configuration of the desktop, but as far as I can tell that is identical to the problem-free configuration of the laptop, and the error doesn't seem to be firewall related.
Everything uses dhcp, everything has a different IP address, and the problem still exists after I've switched the router off and back on which caused it to give everything a new IP address so I'm pretty sure it's not a collision with some device that isn't supposed to be on the network. Unfortunately I don't have access to the router configuration and the person who does is away (and will be for quite a while), but I don't think the problem is in the router anyway.
Any ideas?
