Recommendations for a free/libre alternative to Dyn(Dns)

Hi

I am looking for an alternative to using Dyn(Dns) to connect to my server with while I am out and about (Don't have a fixed ip address).

Have used Dyn before but was wondering if there is an alternative out there that has a more open source/free/libre philosophy. Sort of Spideroak vs Dropbox.

If there is a free (as in beer) option that would be a big bonus.

Cheers

As an alternative the obvious choice here would be no-ip. I don't know how libre/free it is, but works flawless for years here, and it is free as in free beer.

I have been using afraid.org for several months now, running ok.

I chosed the domain name archlinux.tk. smile
the program

inadyn-mt

in the AUR maintains my changing IP uptodate.

It sounds like my computer is setup very similarly to yours: I have a free (price) account and address with DynDNS and I use ddclient because I don't have a fixed IP address.

I'm confused. Why are you looking for an alternative to DynDNS? In what way does DynDNS not have an "open source/free/libre philosophy"? Are you looking for a free (price) service for somthing that you are currently paying DynDNS for?

...I ask because you made me wonder if I should consider using something besides DynDNS. tongue

Hi drcouzelis

The reason for thinking a bit more free/libre was that I am starting to get the feeling that the free/libre setups tend to be more transparent and safe in some ways.

Just looking at the blogg records for afraid.org confirms this for me in this case. Plus, I like the philosophy and try in the small ways that I can to follow it.

No big deal really smile

Re: Recommendations for a free/libre alternative to Dyn(Dns)

I'm running afraid.org now parallel with no-ip. I love the fact that no client software is needed, a simple cronjob with wget or curl suffices. So far it works great (2 days).

I agree that free / libre setups tend to be more transparent and safe.

How is afraid.org more free / libre, more transparent, and more safe than dyndns.com? I don't understand. sad

I have been using no-ip to keep track of many of the friends, family and neighbours that I administer home and SOHO desktops for. I've always used the noip or ddclient packages. SanskritFritz, what script do you have running as a cron job that updates your no-ip account, if you don't mind me asking?

I use the noip  package from [community]. It is a daemon, no cron job is involved with that.

Re: Recommendations for a free/libre alternative to Dyn(Dns)

A small update and warning regarding afraid.org. Be careful which free domain you choose, for example archlinux.tk is broken since yesterday. I learned that the best choices are the ones provided by http://freedns.afraid.org/ itself, like mooo.com

Re: Recommendations for a free/libre alternative to Dyn(Dns)

I use afraid.org as well and the one thing I'd note is that some of the domains are listed in spam databases so you will end up being blacklisted if you run a mailserver or webserver. Whenever someone tries to go to one of my mirrors that I host from home, I always end up hearing about how it's an 'unsafe' page and they should navigate away. Guess that comes with free though. smile
