Huawei E173s-2 3G modem not detected

Hi,

I have a problem with my Huawei E173s-2 modem. The modem works flawlessly under ubuntu, but i cant get it work in Arch. I have installed usb_modeswitch, and it is correctly switched (actually the ID of this model is 1c08 and not 1c05 as stated in the wiki). I have also verified the model id under Ubuntu, and its 1c08 as well, so the modem mode should be set up.

However, i cannot connect with the modem. It does not show up in NetworkManager, is not detected by wvdial (see results below), and sakis3g --interactive ends with a segfault

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
ttyS1<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS1<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS1<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S2 S3

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Have you installed modemmanager?

Re: Huawei E173s-2 3G modem not detected

Yes wvdialconf should. But NM needs the optional modemmanager package to recognize those devices, thats why I asked.

Which wiki do you refer to - this:? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Huawei_E173s
If so, the difference in the ID may be due to you having a E173s-2 perhaps?
Have you tried it with 1c05 as well? see: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubunt … 52196.html

Re: Huawei E173s-2 3G modem not detected

yes, i refer to the E173s article you mentioned.

i was also trying to force the modem to 1c05 with usb_modeswtich, but i could not change the id. i don't really understand how to use that

echo "12d1 1c05" > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id

command under arch. my system has no /usb-serial directory. however i still think, that the 1c08 id is the correct one, as it is also showing in ubuntu, where the modem works....

Re: Huawei E173s-2 3G modem not detected

Actually 1c08 and 1c05 seem to be handled the same

cat /usr/share/usb_modeswitch/12d1:1c0b

So one would think it works.

Post the configs you have created in your trials according to the wiki maybe.

If you have done any trial-and-error with creating usb_modeswitch rules, you may want to re-install it also. The echo command (yes, different path on Arch) above should be the same as setting up a /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/rule for 1c05 to try it out.

Re: Huawei E173s-2 3G modem not detected

i have managed to get it work briefly, but after disconnecting i cant get it work again.

what i did was to uninstall modemmanager and sakis3g and i have also removed the /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1c0b config file (created according to the wiki). suddenly, starting wvdialconf detected my modem, and after reintstalling modemmanager i could use it in networkmanager as well.

however, after reconnection, networkmanager does not detect my modem again.... at least wvdial seems to be working, but i dont really get why networkmanager stopped working....

I couldn't get network manager to work properly either: whenever I needed to reconnect (for example, when it failed to connect at system startup), I had to disconnect (it showed it's connected even if it wasn't), remove the connection, re-create it and only then I would be able to connect again. That was on Ubuntu but I don't think it's Ubuntu-specific.

Also, the wiki article has been updated.
