Browsers won't follow /etc/hosts

I modified /etc/hosts to redirect a certain domain (let's say archlinux.org) to a certain IP by adding this line:

the.ip.i.want archlinux.org

The problem is that if I run ping the.ip.i.want the output is exactly what I expect, but if I try to reach archlinux.org on Firefox or Chrome I see the original website, not the one with the.ip.i.want.
I already restarted Arch twice and I've tried to replace archlinux.org with www.archlinux.org but nothing's changed.

Any ideas?

Is your browser configured to use a proxy?
