Laptop with (disabled) onboard wireless and external USB wireless

I have an older Toshiba laptop with an Intel 2915 ABG network card. The internal card is turned off permanently (hardware switch off). I also have an Asus USB-N13 wireless card for connecting to wireless N.

The Asus card gets detected as wlan0. The Intel card gets detected as eth1 (wired network adapter is eth0).

I can bring wlan0 up by typing "ip link set wlan0 up". I can successfully set my wpa_passpharse.

When I try to run "wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf" I get the following:

rfkill: WLAN hard blocked

I understand that this is because the hardware switch is set to off for the 2915ABG card. How do I get around this so that I can leave the hardware switch off and only use the Asus USB-N13 wireless card?

I would blacklist the kernel module for the Intel card.
