How is the stability of the current driver? I tried the 2012.02 or 03 version (can't remember) and it worked pretty well back then. I'm wondering if this driver is still good. Does the driver support the 3.5 kernel btw?

12.6 isn't as fast in compositing as 12.4 (ie. on KDE if you will open couple of windows with vbox and video player - you will see a nice lag when switching through desktops), but it supports xserver 1.12.
KDE 4.9 rc2 seems to be faster than it's predecessors, and fglrx 12.6 is working pretty nice and fast with it but still not as fast as 12.4.
Personally i don't have problems with stability.
Both 12.4 and 12.6 supports 3.5 kernel through patches.
Just pick up right packages/right repo because we now have more catalyst drivers (stable and legacy) - look at arch's catalyst wiki page.

And as for your question "is it stil good?"... umm... 12.6 seems to be some kind of beta driver for me - i think that problems with compositing' speed occured because amd is working on kde's direct rendering and better support for gnome3 (which are better), so as always in developement - functionality is comming in first place and then they should work on optimization. The question is when the driver will be as fast as it was before - i dunno, maybe upcoming august's release will be better.
btw: 12.6 seems to be faster on games/apps

Thanks Vi0L0, excellent feedback. I don't use compositing, so as long as the driver supports xserver 1.12, hardware video decoding and is stable it's good enough for me.

No problem. Perhaps a simple check to see if /usr/lib/modules/extramodules-$kernel-version/fglrx.ko.gz exists and if so, simply delete it before installing rebuilt modules (it only prevents the installation, not the build), and as I said, no ill effects here from deleting and then re-running catalyst-build-module, so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Naah, i don't like to manually remove files that belongs to a package, and it's imposible to run pacman -R while updating package...
Besides what if it will remove working fglrx module and then for some reason it won't build new one correctly? some catalyst-{kernver} package would stay then incomplete.
Nah, dirty, i don't like it, let user decide and do whatever (s)he wants.

BTW:
I've updated [catalyst] repo and AUR' -daemon -generator -hook -total(*AUR only) with new ati_make.sh script (this script is preparing make variables like ie SMP support), so those packages don't need any /lib anymore (previous ati_make.sh was checking inside /lib only, not /usr/lib).
BUT i don't have time to update those packages in [catalyst-hd234k] and [catalyst-hd234k-12.4] repos, i will do this as soon as i can but guess i won't find time until friday, sorry - anyway the update is not a "must have", as /lib symlink should stay on our systems for some time.

@Vi0L0 @Alucryd:
No luck with X-Server 1.11 and Catalyst 12.6 on Linux 3.4.6 with Radeon HD 7770. The same black screen with white cursor. ;(

Hello,
I have an issue with my notebook and the catalyst-driver. The notebook has an Ati Radeon HD4200 graphics card and I am trying to use the catalyst-hd234k legacy driver, without any success.
Installed packages:
- newest kernel 3.4.5-1
- newest Xorg-Server 1.12.3-1

What I have done:
- blacklisted radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
- loaded fglrx in rc.conf (lsmod says it is loaded)
- generated new xorg.conf with "aticonfig --initial"
- added nomodeset to boot kernel line
- tryed both: catalyst-hd234k-repository and my own compiled catalyst-hd234k-total-package (from AUR)

The result is a black X-Screen (I use the lxdm login manager, but I get the black X-Screen with a manual startx-command too). I can't even switch with the alt-ctrl-f** combinations to another terminal. I can't see any errors and the logs are nearly empty (Xorg.log.0 warnings):

...
Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
...
No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@0:xx:y) found (there are about 15 of them)
...
Module "ddc" already built-in (it is the last entry, this one is not a warning)

Nearly empty means, that "grep EE Xorg.log.0" finds only the standard lines.
lspci says, that my graphics card has been detected correctly (it's BusID doesn't appear in the "No matching Device section"-errors).
I wouldn't mind using the open source driver, but it's a notebook and the open source driver does not use all the power saving mechanics (or I am configuring it wrong...).
Do you have any idea, what this is?

And sorry for my bad english... it's not my native language :-/...

I'm having the exact same problem on the same hardware. I have looked in the logs, but can't see any obvious errors. I have read everything on the wiki and done every step several times and nothing changes.

- loaded fglrx in rc.conf (lsmod says it is loaded)

I think, you don't need to do this.  Maybe that's the cause of the problem?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Exactly the same here on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (Radeon HD4200).

Still the same error, even with fglrx not loaded in rc.conf.

Any further ideas?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hmm, what does fglrxinfo report?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm running a fresh install of Arch with Gnome 3 (systemd is installed). The open source drivers (xf86-video-ati) work fine, but I wanted to see if I could get 12.6 installed.

Here is exactly what I have been doing.

1.) Install catalyst-total-hd234k from AUR w/ yaourt.
2.) aticonfig --initial
3.) Blacklist radeon and radeonhd in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
4.) Add fglrx to the module section of /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
5.) Run mkinitcpio -p linux (Does show fglrx in the build info.)
6.) Edit /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset to the kernel command line.
7.) Run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

I do not have radeon or fglrx listed in /etc/rc.conf.

Here is my xorg.conf (Unchanged aticonfig output.)

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
	Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
	Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
	Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Driver "fglrx"
	BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
	Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
	EndSubSection
EndSection

Fglrxinfo is no help because I can only get to it if I restore my xorg.conf (to nothing) or if I add acpi=off to the kernel command line and that kills 2d/3d acceleration.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

have you added "nomodeset" to your kernel command line?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ahh, sorry - I missed that. Your xorg.conf looks fine (compared with mine) though it may be worth checking that it picked up the correct bus ID

lspci | grep VGA

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series]

Is what I get back so unless the xorg.conf needs the zero with the 5 it should be ok.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@grimsbain

The output of dmesg and the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log will probably help to pinpoint the issue.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi!

I'm using mplayer-vaapi with '-vo vaapi -va vaapi' options. I have the tear free desktop enabled. My problem is that the cpu usage drops, but the tearing remains. I've tried this with compiz and metacity too. I'm using Mobility Radeon HD 4330 512 Mb card with catalyst-hd234k.

EDIT: I've also tried '-vo vaapi:gl'

^ Sometimes I have some tearing too, I think this happens when the file you're playing is low res but you play it "stretched" or full screen (because when I don't, it plays without tearing).

Is that also the case with you?

I've looked into it and noticed it as well. My previous settings which avoided all tearing aren't working any more. It seems to be a Catalyst bug. Also the system feels slower and flash videos aren't very enjoyable in fullscreen any more (used to play 1080p OK).The slowness problem somehow disappeared.

@Unia: I think your problem is caused by the fact that Tear Free Desktop only applies to windowed applications. To avoid tearing in fullscreen applications (i.e. playing a video in fullscreen), you have to set 3D > More Settings > Wait for vertical refresh in amdcccle to On, unless application specifies or Always On. But as I have written above, it doesn't any more work in the current version.

EDIT: It seems that the tearing problems are gone again. Catalyst is just probably buggy. Tearing only rarely appears in flash (but that tearing might have been encoded into the video).

Every video is tearing for me.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi at all,
I've read over 50 pages of the thread, and search on the wiki, but there's a thing I can't understood:

1)
There is or not an updated repo or a package on AUR that compiles the ATI driver with PXP support?

I've tried (just as test) in this way on kubuntu 12.04:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450/

and it works.
I've trying to do the same on Arch, my main linux distro, but still unlucky.

2)
the Catalyst repo manteined by Violo isn't updated: it search for libglx still on /usr/lib64 instead of /usr/lib (as the new Arch policy).
Maybe there is another repository other that in the wiki?

3)
There are so many alternatives to install fglrx driver and no-one working for me (Thinkpad E320 with 6630M and intel 3000). Which is the reccomanded way to do it?

4)
I'm on Arch 3.4.7 and , in addiction to powerexpress error, i've "no screens found" with repository or AUR installation...

Thanks,
HS

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@HariSeldon:
look at the previous page:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1135607
you could try to modify my PKGBUILD from mentioned in url tarball just a little with newest changes and test it, i unfortunatelly don't have pxp hw and that's the reason why i'm not providing pxp support.

Ad 2): newest catalyst is updated, just not to work with pxp tongue.
it's searching in /usr/lib64 because it's using originall ati's switching scripts, which are in fact useless on arch. In mentioned url you will find mine switching scripts which would search in /usr/lib.
But because i cannot even test it right i won't provide pxp changes into mainline, those changes are somehow modifying arch's philosophy by ie. providing ability to install two separate libgl libraries, etc.
And while not being tested right are somehow dangerous and not necessary for most of the systems.

Edit: OK, i did it for you
Welcome back catalyst-total-pxp @AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=61461
Like said i'm unable to test it, i cannot even switch to radeon because it's not supporting my card (7850), but i can see that it's symlinking good and i was able to startx with fglrx at least.

There's usefull script i wrote called pxp_switch_catalyst, it is:
* switching xorg.conf - it will rename xorg.conf into xorg.conf.cat
(if there's fglrx inside) or xorg.conf.oth (if there's intel or radeon inside).
And then it will create link to xorg.conf depending on what did you choose
* running aticonfig --px-Xgpu
* running switchlibGL
* adding/removing fglrx into/from MODULES in rc.conf
Usage: pxp_switch_catalyst <amd|intel|query>
#    amd:   switches to the AMD version of libs.
#    intel: switches to the open-source version of libs.
#    query: checks, which version is currently active and prints either "amd"
#    or "intel" or "unknown" on the standard output.
#    must be root to execute this script

Oh, i was wrong: because path /usr/lib64 is hardcoded into aticonfig binary and i don't actually like/want to hack it whenever aticonfig will change - this package will create /usr/lib64 directory with modified ati's switching scripts inside

Edit2: ofcourse to use this with amd/intel open drivers you will have to install libgl and open drivers for your hw like xf86-video-ati, ati-dri

Edit3: updating catalyst-total-pxp to 12.6-2:
looks like we don't need /usr/lib64 (thank you ATI!, i dunno when you did this, but last year i was waiting for months for this:P ), so removing it and moving switching scripts into /usr/lib/fglrx dir

Sidenote:
running aticonfig --px-igpu or aticonfig --px-dgpu won't run switchlib* scripts (no matter if it's in /usr/lib or /lib64) it will though change an entry in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file (at leats it did not for me but i don't have pxp hw...), so if you want to switch between amd/intel then don't forget to run those scripts (or use pxp_switch_catalyst).
Run aticonfig --px-igpu or aticonfig --px-dgpu to switch between two amd cards.

Edit4: which catalyst you were using with kubuntu 12.4? Did you install 12.6 or used stock one?

catalyst 12.8
on amd website there is download link for catalyst 12.8, but unfortunatelly the link is dead...
it should be alive soon, though i won't be able to update catalyst till friday hmm

Thanks man!
I'll test it for you as soon as i can (I'm busy with holiday now :D ).

In Kubuntu I've installed 12.6 from official repo and everything "just works". The Canonical team have rewritten the switchlibgl script in python and it work really well: it doesn't do only the libgl.so switch, but it shutdown the ati card when not used (you can see this by "lspci -vnnn | grep VGA" )

Thanks!

And finally! I'm able to use browsers like chromium or firefox which were lagging on my kwin before.
Haven't tested games (got warsow only ;P) but at least the desktop is far more usefull and much faster than 12.6
Also kde's direct rendering is getting better and better, hope it will be as fast as it could be with next release.
Edit: GNOME3 also feels faster, and it's usable without CLUTTER_VBLANK=none (then chromium or firefox are not that fast, but still better than with 12.6,)
Do amd devs preffer opera? Because since months it's the only "mainline" browser which was not touched by a lagg on my 7850.

I will perform some test and check packages, update should come soon.
EDIT: AUR was updated, so was the repo

EDIT2: i'm getting good feedback that the catalyst-total-pxp is working fine on some hardware so i think i will put catalyst-utils-pxp package into the repos (hd234k also),
i also have to update catalyst-lts package (sorry for delay!) and figure out how to support systemd with catalyst-daemon
but this will happen when i'll get some free time...

Ubuntu also got `alternatives` tool, which could be usefull here with pxp, arch does not have it...
