vsftpd woes

I'm trying to install vsftpd, preferably for read-only anonymous access that will work from firefox.

I tried messing around with all kinds of options, but the best I could do was to have it let me see the ftp dir from firefox, but everyone outside my network gets a connection timeout.

I reinstalled it so it has a default config.

I tried giving up anonymous and using the ftp user, and that worked with one person, but failed with another.
