Can ssh into server but cannot login to virtual terminal
I can ssh into my arch server in the basement from my laptop upstairs, but I cannot login to the basement computer from a virtual terminal (using physically-attached keyboard and mouse). Really weird.
Any ideas?
I recently had an upgrade issue related to the recent glibc /lib /usr/lib switch, that may or may not be affecting my current problems.

Do you see any errors? What does auth.log show?

Read the offical news, and the numerous other threads, about the /usr/lib/ move - not much point doing anything else until you've fixeed that.
