It doesn't matter which DE/WM you're using, as long as your (main) panel is on one side of the screen.
Please mention the panel type and feel free to share any other tips/tricks or relevant information.
It's a work in progress. I'm excited to get some inspiration from the innovative setups of my fellow Archers.

xfce standard panel, full transparency. The only thing that may be noteworthy is the clock, which is in binary mode (standard xfce clock feature). Best way to display the time on a vert. panel IMO.
But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

Oh, man, this thread is totally relavent to my interests!
Arch Linux
So, I'm a long time fan of Window Maker, and in the past have used it more than any other window manager. I love its vertical dock. For various reasons, I decided to stop using it. I wasn't sure what to switch to. I hate horizontal "taskbars". I think they're awkward, slow, and take up too much space.
I finally settled on OpenBox, and as a taskbar I use... nothing! I right click to start applications and left click to see running and iconified applications. I have a vertical conky setup to show much information. It's worked out very well for me.
Haiku
The other OS I use is Haiku. I love it's default layout! It has a by-default vertical taskbar that is perfect. I don't even care that it always shows applications from every virtual desktop, including things like the file manager, pager, and web server, because it's so incredibly compact that it still looks fine. Plus, thanks to the way Haiku uses window tabs instead of title bars, it's always accessable even when an application is maximized.

What a great start to this thread! I like the idea of discussing things that work better in the vertical panel (like the binary clock).
It seems that people prefer the icon only type task managers due to the lack of space. I'm looking for a more interactive "pager" application which I think would make the task manager redundant. Really I'm just thinking out loud trying to keep the thread going

MS windows's panel is really fit.
I was looking this type of panel in linux.
The real problem is show one of the many running windows, alt+tab is not quick enough.
In Gnome 3, I can just press "windows key", all windows appeared.

I don't... I'm not sure... was that a question?

KDE panel. Has to be on the left side so I can close maximized windows by clicking on the top right corner.

KDE panel (or plasma panel) can't be install only, at least the whole KDE desktop (or plamsa) should be install.

Well, I didn't say standalone KDE panel can be installed.

^ That's what the Shell should look like, nice job!
