wireless security issues

Hi guys, I’ve got a bit of a problem with wireless.
So recently a friend and I were testing a router out against aircrack-ng + reaver, trying to secure it as best we could.
He has made several changes that he hasn’t told me about, the first of which is he has set the SSID to hidden I think, as it ESSID just comes up as “<Length 11>” in Kismet, airodump-ng and Wifite. Also I'm now unable to see if any clients are on the AP when I know his laptop is using it. Also I’m now unable to authenticate to it as each time I try, whether in reaver or the aircrack suite it asks me to specify the ESSID even though I’ve specified the BSSID and channel.
If anyone could help out that would be much appreciated.

Excuse my skepticism. How do we know that 'your friend' is not a neighbor or local business that is trying to keep you out of their router?

Unfortunately you have to take my word for it. But yeah, I understand your skepticism, as if I saw a post such as this, I would think much the same thing, which is of course the unfortunate bit. We would reset the router, but we want to check if it's just something we've done or an issue with the laptop or just a lack on knowledge on our behalf as to why we are no longer able to get into it.
Although out of my 72 posts, have I ever asked a question or given advice with any ill intent?

Nope, it should show up as <hidden>.

Yes I know, that's the reason I'm asking here.. Instead it show's <Length 11>

I have no idea as to your issue of breaking into it. But it does sound *very* shady that you first state that you cannot see devices attached to the AP despite the fact you know he is using it, then in your post above you mention that "we are no longer able to get into it."

I cannot say that i have ever seen you post with ill intent, but the condition's with which this question is posed just seems particularly questionable. Maybe you might be able to indicate what steps you/your friend can remember taking that produced this router's current state?

In regards to the we that's because there are 2 of us there, with 2 laptops, an iphone and android phone and 1 desktop.

Yes I understand completely, and if this thread is deemed to shady, delete it and I'll try figure it out myself..

The steps thus far, is changing the WPA2 key to "Password123".
The SSID is hidden, MAC filtering isn't/shouldn't be on, I'll check that tonight, the 2.4 and 5ghz channels are both active and the guest SSID's are both active, wicd shows about 94% signal from where we've been testing from.
Kismet was previously able to detect the name after about 35 minutes how ever now it's unable to.
Also we have left WPS active, but since we can't get a laptop authenticated without previously knowing the SSID it remains pointless.
