[SOLVED] Can't connect to wireless after Linux 3.5.3-1 update

So I just came back to my laptop after 3 months and updated it through pacman. After updating, though, I've found that my wireless isn't working. I have the Intel 3945 wireless card, so I don't think it's an issue with the driver (the wiki says that udev should load it automatically). Here's some info that will hopefully shed some light on my problem:

iwconfig
wlan0     IEEE 802.11abg  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

ifconfig doesn't have an entry for wlan0. Neither does ip addr.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Thanks!

The behavior of ip addr has changed.  It, like ifconfig does not show devices that do not have an an address by default.

I'll bet that ifconfig -a  shows your wireless device.

Not that you are not associated (according to your iwconfig output).  Nothing will work until you associate with an access point.

Please post the output of sudo iwlist scan   (You may have to install it first)
That will verify that the device is working, and will tell us about the wireless networks that are in range of your system.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to wireless after Linux 3.5.3-1 update

Indeed, ifconfig -a does show wlan0. Here's the output of that:

$ ifconfig -a
wlan0: flags=4098<BROADCAST,MULTICAST>  mtu 1500
        ether 00:18:de:a7:1f:99  txqueuelen 1000  (Ethernet)
        RX packets 0  bytes 0 (0.0 B)
        RX errors 0  dropped 0  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 0  bytes 0 (0.0 B)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

Here's the output of sudo iwlist scan:

# iwlist scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0      Interface doesn't support scanning.

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to wireless after Linux 3.5.3-1 update

$ rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

I tried the things listed on the wiki, and here are the results:

$ sudo ip link set wlan0 up
RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory
$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

Thanks again!

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to wireless after Linux 3.5.3-1 update

You know that udev does a pretty good job most of the time.  So you may want to check to see that the same module is being used as before.  Though if you have already upgraded, comparing might be difficult.  I guess you will have to research your card and its corresponding module.  Also check to see that there aren't multiple modules trying to control your one piece of harware.

Okay, a hunch.  What is the output of dmesg | grep firmware    ??

Hmm, the output of that is somewhat telling:

And so on for a while. So I guess the firmware isn't working/loaded/something? On the wiki it says that linux-firmware is what I want. Do I need to load that in the MODULES section of rc.conf? Or something else? Thanks for all your help, everyone.

Hrmm, well it appears that I already have linux-firmware installed. Do I need to do anything with it? I'm using Wicd as well ... would that be causing any conflict?

Yeah, you may want to install it again.  Things may have broken during the recent file system, er, adjustments.
No, it won't impact wicd in the least.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to wireless after Linux 3.5.3-1 update

Ahh, I got it fixed, but not in the way I would have thought. I tried re-installing linux-firmware, but that didn't do anything. Then, after some searching, I found that linux-firmware is part of the linux package, and doing a search for "linux 3.5.3" comes up with this Arch BBS post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148125

I tried downgrading the linux package, but that didn't work, so I tried the symlink solution that miko recommended and that did it. So now my wireless works, but it seems like the solution was a hack. I guess the linux-firmware package was looking in the wrong place for the firmware, or the linux package was, or something. Either way, it works now, so thanks everyone for your help!
