SSH wont use port

Hello

I have two computers here with arch linux, one is server, one is desktop/server.

Bot has static ips.

Server: 192.168.1.10

Desktop: 192.168.1.1

There is a wireless router(apple airport express) and a gigabit switch between, I have configured the switch to open up port 22 for both ips in any way.
I control MPD allready with the desktop, MPD is running on the server, that connection uses port 6600. And works fine.

But, when I try to ssh the server from the desktop I get:

[roberth@R2D2 ~]$ ssh 192.168.1.10
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.10 port 22: Connection refused

Please can anybody help me:(

Re: SSH wont use port

To add info, can changing a port help? I don't know if port 22 is required in any way?

Re: SSH wont use port

On the target machine do you a) have openssh installed, b) have sshd running, and c) have sshd configured correctly?

echo "big enormous facepalm" > "on my self"

The ssh daemon wasn't running on the target machine. Have only tested so far from my iphone which are connected to the router, and it works great.

Im going into the dark corner of shame and humilition for a while.....

Re: SSH wont use port

But now the target doesn't get any connection with the internet, only the local network, works with ssh and mpd.

Bah....

Re: SSH wont use port

So "server" cannot access the internet, but "desktop" can ssh into "server"?

Seems like you may have a problem with your router and/or switch configuration.

Re: SSH wont use port

Okay?

Well I have an apple airport express, quite simple little router, with only the most common settings like port forwarding and wireless encryption etc.

Internet connection works fine from the desktop which uses static ips with the same adresses(exept the one who is unique for the computer) and it is connected to the router exact same way.

Re: SSH wont use port

Well, what happens if you run "traceroute <external IP address>" on the server?

e.g.

traceroute 1.1.1.1

Re: SSH wont use port

Presumably "Desktop" has internet access as well as local network access? In that case, "pacman -Sw traceroute"  will download the package, and "scp" can be used to transfer files to "Server"..

Alternatively, install sshfs on Desktop, mount Server's filesystem using it (e.g. at /mnt), then use "pacman -r /mnt -S traceroute".

Re: SSH wont use port

[root@C3PO ~]# ping 192.168.0.0
connect: Network is unreachable

If it adds any info.

EDIT: to clarify, C3PO is the server(it's annoying just like the character right now) and R2D2 is my desktop(its usefull and not annoying).

Mounting C3PO with sshfs went just fine after editing the settings on my router. but, still no internet connection for C3PO.

Re: SSH wont use port

When setting only static ips for the ip thyats unique for the computer in local network and let dhcp do the rest solved it. Probably an ip conlict somewhere who cause the issue I had.
