Microphone does not work: Intel HDA

It is the sound card of a Sandy Bridge laptop:

$ arecord --list-devices
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 2/2
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1

* I'm using PulseAudio.
* In alsamixer I see two entries "Capture" that are both unmuted and set to volume 100.
* Both arecord and Audacity seem to record nothing at all.
* The microphone does work under Windows.

Any hints or tips are very welcome!

Re: Microphone does not work: Intel HDA

I think I have the same problem, though I'm not using pulseaudio. I have a Thinkpad T420 (also Sandy Bridge), but since the upgrade to linux 3.4 the internal Microphone won't work anymore. At least I think it was the Kernel upgrade, because after that, a lot more channels appeared in alsamixer.

On the recording side there used to be 3 channels:
-something like analog input, or maybe it was just labeled microphone, I can't remember exactly
-Mic Boost
-Digital Input

Now there are 5;
-Digital
-Dock Mic
-Dock Mic Boost
-Internal Mic
-Internal Mic Boost

I tried a lot of combinations, even setting all to the maximum, but my Microphone still won't work. I will try a downgrade of linux later on and see if it works with the old kernel.

EDIT: It works with linux-3.3.8, so there is some change in alsa with the new kernel, that adds a lot more channels, but the microphone won't work anymore.

Re: Microphone does not work: Intel HDA

I found out that installing alsa-firmware solves the problem, at least for me.

Thanks a lot for letting me know. Unfortunately, installing alsa-firmware didn't change anything here.

I can also confirm this. I've got X201i and my mic is broken (it was ok some time ago) as well.
