Compiz 9.8?

They're already on their second point release upstream, is there anything that's keeping it from AUR/official repositories?

Re: Compiz 9.8?

AFAIK that compiz is very Ubuntu dependent.

Re: Compiz 9.8?

You sure? I tried compiling it myself just now, and it seemed to work fine for the most part.

hi, am very interested in the new compiz, i use ubunt's 9.7 from the AUR, can you please post your make-depends and any extra steps you took to compile it, did you use ubuntu sources?, did you compile it with metacity gconf enabled? if you do a compiz --replace from the cli what sort of messages do you get ?, have you tried all the plugins? Have you tried a recent emerald with it ?
Thanks

As far as I've seen, the makedepends are cmake, boost and pyrex. Also, it's still expecting /usr/bin/python to be Python2, and I haven't found a clean way to update all the files... Patching is probably the only way.

Got it from upstream, as per the Arch Way, of course.

Unfortunately, I'm not entirely familiar with cmake, so I'm not sure how to list Compiz's compile-time settings. I was just trying it out to see if it pulls in an unacceptable number of dependencies (it doesn't), so I don't have any extensive testing info. From a quick glance, most of the plugins (except 3D windows) work.

I vaguely remember they said they're deprecating emerald, so I went with gtk-window-decorator which seems to work.

I use compiz 8.8, so I just logged out and back in instead of doing a compiz --replace.

Re: Compiz 9.8?

Compiz does not depend on Ubuntu. I really wish people would stop saying that and spreading misinformation. Unity is a Compiz plugin that you do not have to build. That's it.

Anyway, I really want to try 0.9.8, but the last time I tried to build the bzr version from the AUR, it didn't compile. Maybe I'll try again and see if it works.

I've been using build since 0.9.0 and it has some nice changes from 0.8.8, but you probably wont notice any night/day differences.

Re: Compiz 9.8?

So... this doesn't seem to be actively maintained in AUR any more... or am I looking in the wrong place?

Where to start...?

Re: Compiz 9.8?

After wasting way too much time on this I created a set of packages for compiz 0.9.8.4:

- compiz9  (compiz-core+libcompizconfig+plugins)
- compiz9-decorator-gtk, compiz9-decorator-kde4
- compiz9-config-backend-gconf, compiz9-config-backend-gsettings
- compiz9-config-python, compiz9-config-settings-manager

The source is now a monolithic tree so there was no point in splitting it any further. Some plugins were disabled in the build, probably for good reason, so I didn't change that.

It mostly works. The gconf backend seems to always crash, but I don't really have a GNOME environment to properly test it.

AUR is refusing the upload. Something about the name having to be in lowercase. Maybe it doesn't support split packages. Anyway, the archive with the PKGBUILD and patches is available at:

http://projectfailure.org/archlinux/com … src.tar.gz

There are also binaries for x86_64 in the same directory. Try them at your own risk.

Thanks a bunch. I wonder why there's so little interest in compiz.

Will this ever make it to official repositories?

Re: Compiz 9.8?

KDE and GNOME users have probably moved over to the default window managers when they started supporting compositing. I guess Compiz became sort of a niche thing. I'm stuck with it because kwin doesn't do OpenGL on VirtualBox, although I appreciate the added flexibility it offers.

As for having the 0.9 branch on official repositories, I don't know what can be done to make it happen. The 0.8 version has been flagged as out of date for months.

Could have sworn being told to do so, my mistake.

It has been said several times by the Compiz developer(s) that the 0.9 branch is not an official stable release version. 0.8.x is the last stable version and 1.0 will be the next stable version. Arch does not put development versions of software in the official repositories, thus 0.9.x will never make it into the official repositories.

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/multilib/x86_64/wine/

Stable:    Wine 1.4.1 (shortlog)
Development:    Wine 1.5.14 (shortlog)
http://winehq.org

Maybe they don't put broken software in the offical repositories?

Hmm. Touche. Maybe there are exceptions. For Wine, isn't the stable release more like an LTS whereas the "development" releases are more like regular versions? I remember thinking that at some point, so maybe it's true.

Wine developers themself, encourage users to always have the latest version when reporting things etc, so it's true, kind of.

Ah, so the official repositories will be updated when 1.0 comes out?

Guess that answers my question, then. Time to wait some more~

Re: Compiz 9.8?

Random IRC guys said, there's just noone around who's interested much in promoting their work / supporting non-developers at the moment BUT "it should come around again eventually once it hits 1.0".

( Random IRC guys is not the most trustworthy source in the world, but one of them said he "was regularly working on compiz stuff + committing important things +complicated sounding details" and I do never question the authenticity of people who say things that are hard to verify because it's... work. )

Also: Tried to compile again. Had to pull half of KDE and Gnome... and more... and gave up because it was a mess.

Which ones are the best PKGBUILDs available now as a starting point for the next time I try?
And for the ones who managed to get a (relatively) recent version to compile / run: Noticed any important bugs or bugfixes already? Or does using it still mostly feel like an unfinished 0.8?

It still mostly felt like an unfinished 0.8. Only bothered to do it because I would have to compile the 0.8 anyway to make it compatible with KDE 4.9.

Incidentally, OpenGL in VirtualBox was broken - again - by a recent update, so I just said to hell with it, switched to VMWare, and am now a satisfied KWin customer.
