Logging WiFi connectivity

This isn't necessarily an Arch issue but more of a general networking setup question.

I'm developing a web app for use on a client's intranet that will be used by clients that are both at desks and mobile. The campus has wifi outdoors but coverage seems to be somewhat spotty with the connection on a netbook dropping periodically while roaming in a truck moving 20-30 MPH and never more than 500ft from any one access point.

My question is this... is there a way/software that will log signal strength of access points over time so that I can attempt to figure out where the gaps are and fill them in with additional access points?

I'm not really an expert in any one area but love computers technology in general so I'm always getting myself involved in projects like this. It's more of a less play around than a business arrangement between myself and the client.
