[Solved] Areca RAID card - /dev/sg* no longer appearing

Hi All,

We recently had 3 drives drop out of our Areca ARC-1230 Hardware RAID6 array. I'd like to probe the CCTL and various other settings with smartctl
However I do not have a /dev/sg* entry any more! This is the crux of my problem. (I remember some time ago (a while admittedly) it was there.)
Smartctl requires I use the syntax

smartctl -a -d areca,1,1 /dev/sg0

...but I am unable, due to these entries being entirely missing. Can anyone advise how I can probe my card using smartctl.

Right now we are up s--- creek without a paddle and have NO redundancy (a tape backup had failed the previous night) so all suggestions welcome!

Since I found the solution, I will post this here in order to help others:

1). pacman -S makedev
2). cd /dev && MAKEDEV sg
3). ???
4). PROFIT
