Recently its been happening a lot, I am getting this kind of behaviour from my display, sometimes happens when I return the laptop from a sleep, and other times when I hook up an external monitor:
Also, when I play games (say Frozen synapse or Torchlight) the laptop would just make a weird sound, the display gets totally screwed (like with green artifacts) and reboots by itself.
I recorded a video showing this: http://youtu.be/iS705x2F1zU
What can be the cause of this? Where can I check for errors?
thanks for the help

i asked you because could be a problem related to a package update....so check your latest update
reading your errors.log i see many errors but no one related to video card.
post your Xorg.0.log
maybe it is not a video card related problem, i say it because in the log i can see many ATA2 errors

Maybe its just that the card is to crappy and literally poops out when it takes heavy load? Hence the system crashes and reboots completely, I doubt there is a log somewhere. Anyways at least the problem is very well documented now
thanks again for your help!

oh, yes, then, with an Intel you have some tools (but i've never used their)
try to heavy load your:
system -> benchmark -> phoronix test suite
+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox

which benchmarks do you suggest to run? I just installed the phoronix test suite

since the problem is video related, i suggest you to run 3D test such as:
lightsmark, nexuiz, unigine
PS: in AUR we have 3 different benchmark based on unigine
+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox
+laptop: Apple | MacBook (2,1) | 2GB ram | Mac OS X 10.4 -> DIED

Same problem here, but I can only confirm the multi monitor problem since I'm not playing games. I think these bugs in the intel driver are known for quite a long time but still not solved.

Running nexuiz benchmark via:
phoronix-test-suite benchmark pts/nexuiz
gives me: http://ompldr.org/vZmcxMQ (horizontal lines on right half of the screen, same as my first post)
At first it displays the game running and then poops out.
One fact you should know is that the laptop IS NOT frozen or anything, I can in fact change to another tty (via ctrl+alt+f2 for example), input my username and password, then enter sudo reboot, enter my password and the laptop reboots no problem (I have to do this all blind though).

do you get this problem randomly or after a defined time?
+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox

The longest time I have been able to play is like....5 minutes. It doesn't after a predefined time, but it ALWAYS happens

do you have a cpu+graphic chip, in the same package?

I can't believe I haven't posted the card details....lol, here:

I have the same CPU. I only have problems with artifacts with sna. Haven't tried the above benchmark though...
EDIT: See this thread regarding sna: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144500

i asked it because if it's a thermal problem further the 3D benchmarks, you can try a CPU benchmark which raise your CPU temperature and consequently your graphic card temperature. at this point you can have artifacts
