usb mouse stops working

I've had an ongoing issue for a few weeks now with my usb mouse.  It will quit working, sometimes in the middle of using it.  I've tried reinstalling the xorg input drivers, using a different kernel version (linux-ck), but it's still happening.  Here's some dmesg output:

the disconnects are when I unplug/replug the mouse, which will usually get it working again for a while, but the more I do this the less time it seems to keep working.

[147780.646065] usb 3-1: new low-speed USB device number 8 using ohci_hcd

Do you have the ehci_hcd module loaded?  Unless you have USB1.0 devices (which your mouse is probably not) connected to your computer, you definitely need that module.

Re: usb mouse stops working

when i kill ohci-hcd and load ehci-hcd, the mouse doesn't work at all, but when i reload the ohci-hcd module it starts working again.  It is a really old mouse so it probably is 1.0, never had problems with it until recently.  I haven't had issues with the windows partition, but I usually don't stay in there more than a few hours at a time, I guess I can use windows for a day or two and see if it happens there, unless someone else has a suggestion.

Re: usb mouse stops working

Did you start having problems after updating your system perhaps?  If so, do you know what packages you recently updated?

Also, do have any settings in xorg.conf dealing with your mouse?

Re: usb mouse stops working

I started having this problem about 3 weeks ago myself. I thought it was related to thunar and XFCE4 but now I am not sure (posted about it here:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149730).

I have the ehci_hcd module loaded and not the ohci_hcd. When I hot plug the device after it stops working dmesg reports:

[ 5880.092759] usb 1-1.2.2: USB disconnect, device number 8
[ 5881.057250] usb 1-1.2.2: new low-speed USB device number 9 using ehci_hcd

/var/log/message shows:

But I see nothing when the device stops working.

The laptop is about 6 months old and the mouse came with it.

I do keep up to date, at the very least, once a week.

Re: usb mouse stops working

@danns First off, yeenoghu is an awesome name for a computer!  I've named a computer devil before but never considered one of the demon princes of D&D lore.

I'm putting a response in your original forum post that you linked to, so we can keep these issues separate.

Starting to get annoying when playing quake live.

What to do?  sad

Re: usb mouse stops working

Sorry for resurrecting the thread on my first post smile
It does come up first for me using google and no solution yet, so it felt valid to post a possible solution.

I have had the same problems until I read "Power issues for USB 2.0" at:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/206614/u … me-to-time

In my setup I only have my mouse and a USB headset, but seeing lsusb -v output below they could possibly require too much if plugged in to the same bus.
I simply looked for the port combo that assigned the USB devices to different buses and I have had that setup for well over a week now without any problem.
Hopefully I haven't spoken too soon.

The headset is a Logitech G35 and mouse is Mionix Naos 5000.

Kept getting random mouse freezes (both devices on Bus 004):

conus@moogle ~ $ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04b4:1224 Cypress Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 046d:0a15 Logitech, Inc.

Current setup (so far so good):

conus@moogle ~ $ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 046d:0a15 Logitech, Inc.
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04b4:1224 Cypress Semiconductor Corp.

Some info cut out.

conus@moogle ~ $ lsusb -v

    MaxPower 100mA

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04b4:1224 Cypress Semiconductor Corp

Starting to get annoying when playing quake live.

What to do?  sad

This is also happening to me, but only when I boot non-gui (slim, etc), 'systemd.unit=multi-user.target' (console mode).
After a while, of no inactivity, the mouse works fine, but in the [bold]dmesg | tail [/bold] log --- you will see the exact same hogging lines as above.

Man, I have been trying to find the reason why all my mouses keep disconnecting on my other computer. Now I have tried actually starting the desktop, and like you said, the mouse does not disconnect anymore. I really wonder why that keeps happening in console mode. Maybe it is because the mouse is not needed in that mode?
