fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

I get the error "Fast TSC calibration failed" on the screen after upgrading to linux 3.6, is this a new bug or something stupid I did on my end. (yeah, I know it's in testing which is why I'm trying it now to find any issues)

I get the same message here so it's not something on your end.

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

If you have x86 (i.e i686) installed - then here, found this on the web https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/9/26/131 - it seems to indicate a patch for the error message.

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

Update:

I did get this same error, after upgrading:  upgraded linux (3.5.6-1 -> 3.6.2-1)

And yes, I use i686.

It appeared once or maybe twice, then stopped showing (on the boot screen).
However, it still appears in the journalctl log now.

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

Same Error here with arch 64 bits after upgrading from kernel 3.5.6 to 3.6.2

Have I need to start worry or is just some warning i could live with?

Furthermore... there is any solution to fix this or we have to wait for the next kernel release?

Sorry for my bad english

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

I had this warning during one or two boots after upgrading to 3.6.2(-ck), it didn't show up since. I don't think I changed anything, neither was there any update I could think of affecting this.
Running x86_64.

if you mean the "Fast TSC calibration failed" error, no. the "Failed to get maximum backlight value" I'm not getting so I assumed it's not related to the previous error

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

This also occured for me, and it seems like it is the current linux Kernel after an update, but I don't seem to be able to rollback because it isn't listed amongst /var/cache/pacman/pkg.

This is the output of ls:

# cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/; ls | grep linux
archlinux-keyring-20120915-1-any.pkg.tar.xz
linux-3.6.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
linux-api-headers-3.5.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
linux-firmware-20120625-1-any.pkg.tar.xz
util-linux-2.22.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz

So downgrading is out of the question as far as getting the old Kernel, unless I want to reinstall the entire system as the Wiki suggests, in an instance where it would be too problematic.

If I wasn't stealing internet, I would reinstall the system and keep my /dev/sda3 (home partition). Now I'm seeing if I can google the original 3.6.1 linux kernel, though I doubt it will work if I do not have the same one as was listed on the arch system prior to this disaster.

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

I have x86_64.

I see

[drm:intel_panel_setup_backlight] *ERROR* Failed to get maximum backlight value"  is startup.

But not tsc: Fast TSC calibration failed message.

I have normal Harddisk not SSD.

Look at this and the reply, seems like there are no side effects like disintegrating computers etc. so I am going to stop reading that line when it is logged to my screen...

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

For those interested in some background...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Stamp_Counter

This is interesting from the link above...

"Operating system support

The RDTSC instruction can be enabled or disabled by operating systems. For example, on some versions of the Linux kernel, seccomp sandboxing mode disables RDTSC.[8] It can also be disabled using the PR_SET_TSC argument to the prctl() syscall.[9]"

It may also be a kernel change for use in the chromebook

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

"They have been added to those processors mainly to allow system performance measurements and less for traffic shaping in networks. But, while they are present, their use is quite popular. In the Pentium processor and its successors (and most of its clones), this is a 64-bit-wide TSC (Time Stamp Counter) register; its content is incremented by a value of one in each processor clock."

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

I also get the error "Fast TSC calibration failed" on the screen after upgrading to linux 3.6

  My kernel

[sqlpython@bridgelinux ~]$ uname -r
3.6.3-1-ARCH

As you can see I am from the Unholy great Unwashed hoard.
Just wanted to add my failed message to the database of info..
Not looking for Support.
  I lowered my gaze and did not look directly at the Arch as I posted.

Re: fast tsc calibration failed after upgrade to linux 3.6

Just upgraded 4 packages and the Error message is now gone..

[2012-10-26 05:12] upgraded bison (2.6.2-1 -> 2.6.4-1)
[2012-10-26 05:12] upgraded coreutils (8.19-1 -> 8.20-1)
[2012-10-26 05:12] upgraded cryptsetup (1.5.0-2 -> 1.5.1-1)
[2012-10-26 05:12] upgraded systemd (194-4 -> 195-2)

I am thinking that the systemd 195-2 may have been that which helped the situation.
