Everything Gnome3 related crashes

Hello out there,

I wanted to give Gnome 3 a shot. However, almost every app I launch crashes immediately. I can get into the Activity Screen, switch desktops. Searching crashes as well. The only application I was able to launch
was xterm.
Launching programs there always gives me a:

Segmentation fault

I installed Cinnamon as well. But same thing there. I also noticed that in both DE the gtk theme is very ugly. I was able to get into the Cinnamon system settings but changing styles there didn't have any effect.
I'm using GDM so Gnome should get launched correctly. I've got the dbus daemon running.
Could my xf86-video-ati driver be a problem?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the driver, but I had a similar problem some time ago, because my card was too old for gnome-shell.
What card are you using?

It's a Radeon HD 4670, should be good enough I guess!

Re: Everything Gnome3 related crashes

That really should be more than enough...
The "ugly" gtk theme does provide a clue tough:
do you have "gnome-themes-standard" installed?

Yes. Gtk3 as well. I just ran the gnome-terminal in xfce. Apparently I was missing gtk-engine-unico. Installed that and the warning went away.
But still gives me Segmentation fault (core dumped).

//EDIT:
I made a gnome-shell replacement in xfce. Noticed something funny:
Only by using guake I am able to launch the gnome apps. But as soon as I click on them and bring them to focus they crash.

//EDIT2:

Okay, I'm in Gnome3 again and I'm able to launch all applications BUT gnome ones. So that's gnome-terminal, epiphany etc.
dmesg says:

 epiphany[21110]: segfault at 4 ip 00007f011d26caa1 sp 00007fff92ff0420 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.3200.4[7f011d258000+4c000]

for every app.
I reinstalled lib32-glib2 and glib2 but no change.

Re: Everything Gnome3 related crashes

I am out of ideas...
You can try these and see if you can progress from there, but It's guesswork...
1. Try running gnome-tweak-tool and change the theme, to see if the crashes stop;
2. Try running one of the crashing applications under "gdb". You will have to figure out the error yourself, my experience with gdb is extremely limited.

Good luck...

Take a look at:

It is about nvidia, but it may give you some ideas.

Re: Everything Gnome3 related crashes

@murr4y, you've possibly got a problematic gtk theme, so you'll be able to fix this issue by deleting or moving your customized one in order to force gtk to use its ugly default. For the meantime you can run `gnome-tweak-tool` and choose adwaita or another until you find a compatible version of that theme you feel like so much.

P.S: `gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme` in a terminal should be a simpler way of fixing it whenever you need to.

Re: Everything Gnome3 related crashes

I also had similar problems. Most gnome3 applications were crashing, but the gtk2 ones were working.

This was the outpùt of dmesg:

[  332.015380] gnome-control-c[1198]: segfault at 7fff44e9aff8 ip 00007fec39b74744 sp 00007fff44e9b000 error 6 in libuim-scm.so.0.1.0[7fec39b6b000+23000]

I uninstalled uim, and everything is working again.
