When I booted my laptop this morning, I was greeted with a blank blue screen and the mouse cursor. Turns out yesterday's gdm upgrade was the culprit, apparently preventing X and/or Xfce from starting up properly.
After some fiddling, I managed to get back to tty1, which read (among other things):
gdm-binary[513]: GLib-GIO-CRITICAL: g_dbus_method_invocation_return_gerror: assertion `error != NULL` failed
gdm-binary[513]: GLib-CRITICAL: g_error_free: assertion `error != NULL` failed
Downgrading gdm (3.6.1-1 -> 3.4.1-3) fixed the issue.
Is this something I should report on the bug tracker?

check out the latest news. you need to switch to systemd.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Ah, I hadn't seen that yet (and might not have recognized the signifance right away) - thanks!
I knew putting that off would come back to haunt me...
