Read only filesystem problem

Hi,
I have a strange problem. After some time of running archlinux the root filesystem suddenly becomes read-only. It happened 3 times yet. I'm using LVM and the root volume is /dev/mapper/VG0-archlinux2 and filesystem type is reiserfs.

If i tried to remount it read-write using command

mount -o remount,rw /

i got this:

sudo: unable to open /var/db/sudo/uiii/3: Read-only file system
mount: /dev/mapper/VG0-archlinux2: can't read superblock

Only reboot helps.

my machine is (uname -a):

Linux uiii-arch 3.5.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Sep 15 08:12:04 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

/etc/mtab (when problem occured):

Re: Read only filesystem problem

That looks fine, but have you had SMART turned off on that drive for a while? When did you run the short offline test? Could you run a long test?

Re: Read only filesystem problem

I hadn't  have smartctl installed until now. When I run smartctl -a /dev/sda first it says the option -son to turn on SMART support. And also something about test, therefore I ran the short offline test. I can run long when it will be finished I send the results.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Even if the long test completes without erroring out, could you post the updated "smartctl -a" output? In particular, I'm curious whether the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count value has increased in the time between readings.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Maybe it's not the disk failing after all then. SMART isn't 100% reliable, but I'd expect it to pick up something if you're experiencing this level of I/O errors.

So I guess the next thing I can recommend is running a fsck on the affected partition. You'll need reiserfsprogs installed for that, and you'll need to have the partition either unmounted or mounted readonly.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

I've tried that before. The first time the problem occured fsck found some corruptions (of files mainly related to gajim, but I think it doesn't matter) a I had to rebuild tree. But second time no curruptions were found. So I assume that it depends on the exact time and running processes when the "something", what remounts the filesystem, happens.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Mmm, what the "something" is, is I/O errors, i.e.:

end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 436711063

Back in the day, these would result in kernel panics. Nowadays the filesystem drivers are a lot more resilient, and simply remount the filesystem readonly so that your system remains in a relatively usable state. In my experience, hardware issues are the usual culprit, but in this case it seems that the problem lies elsewhere. Unfortunately I'm all out of ideas. I suggest that you google for terms relating to "reiserfs" and "I/O error" and see what you come up with. It's possible that the problem lies with your LVM too, but I'm not too familiar with those, so I can't really help there either.

Mayxe someone else can shed some light on this issue. In any case, hopefully you'll find an solution. Good luck.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

You'd have to try smartctl on every drive not just one.

I have only one drive. Shuld I run smartctl on parcilar partitions, or even LVM logical volumes?

Only on entire disks. Smart is a device-protocol

LVM, NVM.  Most people have multiple disks in an LVM, but a LVM can be multiple partitions on just one disk.  A check might be to check each partition within the LVM.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Usually when read only filesystem happens for odd reason, it could be trying to mount the wrong filesystem (or the wrong part of the LVM) and it doesn't think it's the right one it should be mounting so it mounts it read-only.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Try replacing or at least reseating the cable.  That solved a SATA HDD issue I had years ago.  The machine had worked fine for months; the problem appeared out of nowhere.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

I do not think it's only a HDD problem, i have had the same problem on my Desktop and VPS, is different computers with the same problem.
On my "Desktop" the system boot with rw then after some time is remounted as RO, i checked the cables, i unplug and replug the sata cable and the problem disappear!

But then after some few days i login to my vps and had the same problem!
Maybe is some update causing this or not, different computers having the same problem

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Same here. No LVM and I'm using ext4.

After booting, the root filesystem is mounted read-write and everything works as usual. Then, out of nowhere, I get I/O errors and the filesystem is mounted read-only.

Happened at least on 3.6.5 and 3.6.6.

Not entirely sure, but I think I was doing a backup with rsync each time it occurred. Maybe high I/O has something to do with it?

Maybe this Ubuntu bug is relevant: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1063354

Edit: Yes, it happened the last three evenings while I made a backup using rsync. Surprisingly, after rebooting the backup ran fine each time.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

I have encountered this with BTRFS on a SSD recently (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149661). I never found the solution and just reinstalled the system with ext4.

Re: Read only filesystem problem

I've same problem with an asus laptop, with one hdd. On the device I've some partitions (home, root, backup, var) but this error appears with 'home' only. Sometimes the mount options turns into "read-only", but only on home-partition (ext4, but root, var and a download-directory is ext4 too but they works well).
I found this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1052099 - I hope this helps for me - and for you too smile

The other partition works well on same disk as I wrote above.

Is /home on /dev/sda3?

Re: Read only filesystem problem

Yes. And the other partitions works well. I meet this error about 4-5 times (in the last two months?) but everytime the sda3 was the "bad" partition.

I'd start backing stuff up and definitely close down sda3 and use another partition for /home if you have any extra space left.
