wireless keeps dropping out

The wireless was working fine, i had it working with network-manager i then was doing some work that i wanted to do via ethernet so switched the wireless off using the switch and now it keeps dropping out, i have had to remove network-manager as it wouldnt let me connect to wired for some reason, and have tried to get wireless re-working with wifi-menu, i have delected the config and created one using the examples and using netcfg and still having no luck. I looks as if the device is going into "power saving" and wont come out, outputs below:

iwconfig

 wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=17 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

Have you tried to run it manually in a terminal configuring it with iwconfig (or iw, which is its successor I guess) and running manually dhcpcd after that? It might give you more output.

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

Before you ran "wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf": Did you tell your wlan device which Access Point to associate with (e.g. with iwconfig or iw)? Have you run dhcpcd or do you have a static IP?

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

Btw. I seem to have overlooked your first post to fast: iwconfig shows you, that you weren't associated with any Access Point, thus, of course, you cannot access the internet. But now: First try to configure it manually, to test, if it runs, then move on.

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

You still need an IP address! Do you use static IPs? Otherwise you still need to invoke dhcpcd!

No i dont, i figured starting dhcpcd would be pointless if i wasn't connected, i shall try.

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

Getting an IP Address is crucial for being able to connect to the Internet: So dhcpcd should be the first command after iwconfig wlan0 essid BTHomeHub-4p9Q . However: After having specified the access point via iwconfig: What does iwconfig tell? Next: Are you sure, that BTHomeHub-4p9Q is the right name for the router you want to connect to? - What does iwlist scan say? Are you sure, that the router is configured correctly? Is the router configured for using dhcp or are the ip's static?

okay

However: After having specified the access point via iwconfig: What does iwconfig tell?

it shows the following

 wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"BTHomeHub-4P9Q"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.457 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

          Power Management:off

Next: Are you sure, that BTHomeHub-4p9Q is the right name for the router you want to connect to? - What does iwlist scan say? Are you sure, that the router is configured correctly? Is the router configured for using dhcp or are the ip's static?

Yes, i am certain, other devices work fine, its using dchp iwlist shows

[adam@arch ~]$ iwlist wlan0 scanning essid BTHomeHub-4P9Q
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Operation not permitted

Ok, seems so, as if I was not completly right. Indeed, you should be able to authenticate to the Router without having an IP. The IP however than must be obtained to access the rest of the internet. So I am sorry for this confusion. Nevertheless this doesn't solve your Problem.

[adam@arch ~]$ iwlist wlan0 scanning essid BTHomeHub-4P9Q
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Operation not permitted

Ok, seems so as if your wlan device is blocked. What happens if you type in "ifconfig wlan0 up" and "rfkill list all" ? What is the output of these commands.

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

Okay, so i did a reinstall, which fixed it, but interestingly. on the first install i did an install using wireless, the wireless worked fine upon the first setup (on the disc) then once i had chroot'd and tried to set up wireless then, it wouldnt work, do i wiped all, installed again this time using cable from the disc and then did wireless when chroot'd and it all worked fine. So something wierd is going on, its working now but im not quite sure why.

Re: wireless keeps dropping out

The problem may be due to ath9k. Since the last kernel update to 3.6.6 I've experienced random problems with the wireless of a laptop that uses this driver, while another one which uses b43 works fine. The problem starts when I resume from hibernate, but it doesn't always happen. The "fix" is to unload e reload the module. The hardware is an AR928X.
