[Systemd] Very long boot time

I have a very long boot time with my Arch.
Startup finished in 828766ms (kernel) + 63430ms (userspace) = 892196ms

Especially after login into gnome, it takes quite a while until the desktop is visible. In meanwhile, I only see the wallpaper.  Does anyone has a suggestion how to fix that?

Linux hostname 3.6.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Nov 5 11:57:22 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

I don't really know how to fix your problem, but how does that fit in this board?

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

828766ms (kernel)

*whistles*

Impressive. It takes approximately 14 minutes to load your kernel. How did you manage that? Is it a custom kernel with everything compiled in? Or are you running a HDD operating at something rediculous like 200 RPM?

Honestly, you either have serious hardware problems, or you're trolling.

Here is problem #1. Why you had to wait almost 14 minutes for btrfs to load? You are aware btrfs is still under development? Can you boot with "verbose" parameter in kernel command line (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bo … ight_Debug)?

Here is problem #2. I have no idea what gdbus is. Whatever it is, i'm 100% sure it should not fail like this; it's probably kernel bug. Can you reproduce this problem with linux-lts?

edit: I accidentally a word
edit2: this is not related (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152878)? This could be hw problem.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

I think the kernel taking so long to laod would indicate a hw problemt to me as well.  Boot with the live media and sue smartctl on that.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

@WorMzy:
1. No I am not trolling. Nevertheless, these times are very very strange indeed. Therefore I did reboot the whole system again and now I get the following

Startup finished in 35133ms (kernel) + 67946ms (userspace) = 103080ms

Still a lot IMHO
2. No custom kernel. It's the latest kernel

@hiciu
1.  I don't know why it took 14' but I know that btrfs is still in development, but so far I never had such problems
2. boot with "verbose" parameter in kernel command line > yeah, will do that
3. it seems that on onther boots, there are other tasks which are blocked for more than 120s, so it's not always the same. Will check further...

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

not sure if OP is still having this issue, but I was having a similar issue, wasn't sure where to begin so I was going to do a complete re-install killing my partitions and all.

I loaded up gparted deleted my extended partition which had my swap and data drive on it.  Recreated both partitions as primary adjusted fstab to reflect the changes and rebooted... BAM, booted faster then ever.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

I also did a complete re installation of the system. I use ext4 instead of btrfs. The times are still not that impressive, but better

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

I spoke too soon.  Came into work today and booted up, after 12 minutes my boot was still hanging with:

systemd-fsck[265]: /dev/sda3

yesterday my the number in brackets was 244.

I ended up booting to a live CD (linux mint) mounting my data drive, which is /dev/sda3, and deleting a couple folders, and when I rebooted, the system came up.  So I'm not sure what's going on, hard drive dying?  Though Before I put Arch on this laptop, everything was running smoothly.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

As I stated a month ago in post #5, I really really really think you all need to take a good look at the health of your drives. Use smartmontools, there is a wiki page for it and everything to get your started.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

@WonderWoofy
Thanx for the info, was looking for a tool to test the drive.  I just ran it, here are the results:

$ sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda
smartctl 6.0 2012-10-10 r3643 [x86_64-linux-3.6.10-1-ARCH] (local build)

Drive command "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode" successful.
Testing has begun.
Please wait 2 minutes for test to complete.
Test will complete after Thu Dec 20 11:58:04 2012

Use smartctl -X to abort test.
$ sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda
smartctl 6.0 2012-10-10 r3643 [x86_64-linux-3.6.10-1-ARCH] (local build)

I am running the long test now, it will complete in about 1 hour

The problem I have appears to be on the second partition that gets mounted.  /dev/sda has 2 partitions:

/dev/sda1  is mounted as  /
/dev/sda2  gets mounted as /mnt/doitdata

in fstab, if I have the mount line for /dev/sda2, that's where my system hangs on the systemd-fsck line.  If I remove the mount point for /dev/sda2, the system boots without problem.  I even deleted the /dev/sda2 partition (along with all data), and recreated it as ext4, re-added the mount point and BAM, it hangs on the systemd-fsck line.

when booting in the grub boot menu if I chose the boot option of Fallback initramfs, there is a 60% chance that my system will boot fine.  I don't think it's hardware related as prior to putting arch on last week, I was running linux mint with zero issues.

I'm not sure what my issue is, and I'd hate to have to completely wipe my drive and start over, but I'm beginning to think that's what I need to do, as I cannot depend on my system booting properly.

btw, currently /dev/sda2 is currently empty and my system still hung on bootup.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

I ended up wiping my drive, and putting in the latest Arch install media, and during boot, after the system logs in as root and when it loads the sound driver, the system hard locks up.  I then tried the boot disk from November, and same thing.

Odd thing is, I installed the latest Linux Mint 14 with no problem.  So, I'm puzzled as to what it could be.

any ideas?  I ran the HP hardware diagnostic, and the system came back clean.

Still my boot time is not so impressive. What can be done to improve "NetworkManager" or "systemd-logind"?

From the look of it, you're suffering from slow media. Follow this:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot#Optimization and see if it helps.

Re: [Systemd] Very long boot time

Is this a fresh system install?

Have you partitioned the disk before?
How did you partition the disk this time?

Mechanical or SS?
