I always have my headphones plugged into my computers, but today, when I tried to listen to a song, I didn't hear any audio. I later found out that the only way for audio to work is if I remove my headphones, then plug them back in. Thats the only solution I found, and it's one I would rather not use. All I know is that I am using ALSA, not OSS. Another note, I installed Compiz today. Would that have anything to do with it?

Adding my user to the audio group solved my problem.
Strange as to why this was not already set, and how it happened in the first place...
Please excuse my stupidity.

In systemd, you chould not be in the usualy groups of the sysvinit days. There is a udev tag called uaccess that handles this functionality now, and it is taken care of by the logind functionality.
