[SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

Hi guys,

For a couple days now, I've got a pretty annoying problem with my computer mouse: it randomly just stops half-working.

I try to explain it in a little more detail:

E.g., when I am doing some stuff in Firefox, after a couple minutes (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter), the mouse seems to be "captured" by something. I.e. I can use it pretty normally in Firefox (except the wheel button press doesn't work anymore), but KDE or any other program doesn't get anymore most hover events. Sometimes for a little while I can still click on the entries of open programs in the taskbar (which KDE seems to take as a double click). Also, a click with the left button still works if I close all open windows.

Another example: Earlier on today the mouse didn't get caught by firefox, but by VLC which was open on the second monitor. A click *anywhere* (first & second monitor) acted like a click on vlc. So a e.g. double click on the desktop background on monitor 1 switched vlc running on monitor 2 into fullscreen. And a right click opened the vlc context menu and when I selected an entry in the menu, the action also got send to vlc.

But all this time the keyboard is working just fine. So I ran "xev" to see, if that gets any events from the mouse, and it didn't - at first. But then I did a right click into the xev-window, pressed esc to close the context menu - and suddenly all mouse events (hovering/clicking) were recognised by xev. But I still wasn't able to do anything in KDE, nothing else seemed changed.

I searched the internet, and came across multile threads discussing similar issues. Some of them suggested that gtk apps could be causing problems. So I restartet KDE and didn't start any gtk apps (i.e. no thunderbird and no firefox. I believe that was all the gtk apps running at autostart). But, nevertheless, after a couple minutes the problem occured again.

In another thread, removing libmtp was suggested to solve the problem. But that didn't help either.

And another thread suggested removing the module "ehci_hcd" and to use instead "ohci_hcd", but doing this would cause all usb devices to disappear (mouse, keyboard, usb internet stick, etc.)

I also simply tried to remove the usb conenction of the mouse and replug it again, but that just made it worse. Now all I was able to do was moving the cursor, but that was about it, no clicking anywhere in any way did anything

I also checked dmesg, but there wasn't any new message in there that could give a clue as to what is causing this issues (I did a complete restart of the computer, but as the problem started to occur there was no new line added to dmesg).

It's a quite strange problem, it somtimes seem to have different effects than other times. But it always is very annoying and reduces the usability of the computer tremendously!

If anybody has any suggestion. If you want me to post any more information, any log/..., I'll be happy to do so! Anything, that'll help to fix this issue is welcome :-)

Thanks in advance

PS: Oh, and I'm using Arch 64Bit.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

Nobody any idea?

I think, I even figured out, when this problem occurs: Most times when I use a click with the mouse wheel in the browser to e.g. open a link in a new tab, then the mouse is "gone" (though I still can move it around without any problems)...

That's something really annoying, so I'd highly appreciate any help :-)

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

Same problem here. It happened with chromium yesterday but today when I was tweaking lancelot settings it happened again. Really annoying and I don' t find any error logs relevant either. Maybe I should return to Gnome or unity? It seems as if some program grabs the mouse.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

@xgdgsc
I compared your list of running processes to mine, and I couldn't spot any major difference (except of course in some different programs/etc.).

However, these issues didn't happen for about 2 days for me, and I started to think, that maybe in somerecent update, this issue was "fixed" - but then it happened again just now a couple minutes ago hmm

I also compared a list of processes when everything was working fine to a list of processes when the mouse did these funny things. And I again wasn't able to spot any significant difference...

I even went a step further and progressively killed processes to see if at some point the mouse starts working again, but I eventually just crashed KDE ^^

Anybody out there able to help us innocent Arch users??

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

Might be the same problem or not, but I also have a problem with my mouse for a couple days now. In my case it's only left mouse button which stops working randomly and unplug-plug back (or to the other USB port) does not change anything (does NOT make it worth). Currently I just log-out and log back in to fix it.
I'm using ArchLinux x32, KDE, up-to-date

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

I just had the same problem again. It doesn't seem to appear that often anymore, but that might be due to me trying to avoid clicks with the mouse wheel e.g. to open a link in a new tab (thank God Firegestures has a gesture set for that)...

Anybody any idea?

Re: [SOLVED] KDE - mouse stops half-working repeatedly and randomly

I still have this problem.

I have been using the following old versions of some packages:
pixman 0.26.2-1
cairo 1.12.8-1
xorg-server-common 1.13.0-3
xorg-server 1.13.0-3

While using these old packages the problem has been gone, but now i had to upgrade because of ABI mismatch error in xorg.
After i upgraded theses packages the problem started again.

It happens randomly. The right mouse button stops working. The left button sometimes partially works, but the click doesn't end up where the pointer is, the clicks register on random parts of the screen.
I have to logout by using the keyboard to make it work again.

Any ideas?

Still happening to me with 4.10. I 'm using all up to date packages.

I finally figured out why this happens (for me at least), thanks to chx: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1233988

Thanks. That solved the issue for me too! Now I disable KDE built-in gestures and use easystroke instead.
It's kind of a regression that never happened before something like KDE 4.7?

Thanks, "xdotool mouseup 2" solves it for me too (running it with "3" didn't seem to work for me...).

Marking as solved (well, it isn't really solved, but it's at least working...)
