Pidgin 2.10.6 can't connect to Gmail

I can't get pidgin to connect to Gtalk.  I've googled it for information and saw
this post and this one, but to no avail.  Is anyone having similar problems?

Do you see any errors in Pidgin's "debug window"?  Also, is your libpurple package up to date?

Does this look like a DNS error?  I think it does, but I have no idea how to fix it.  Generally, I just type in 

sudo dhcpcd

and stuff starts working again, but not so with pidgin.  I even tried turning off my firewall; nothing.

Just ran into this problem myself, GTalk with Pidgin doesn't seem to connect all the time.

Seems that Pidgin tries to connect via gmail.com (which should work), but doesn't seem to work everytime (could be down to my ISPs DNS). Changing Pidgins connect via server to talk.google.com, seems to solve the problem completely.
