.local hostnames are not resolved

According to the wiki, after modifing nsswitch.conf to

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

.local hostnames should be resolved. But they aren't.

$ ping virtue.local
ping: unknown host virtue.local

However, avahi-discover finds the host:

Host virtue.local (192.168.42.23), port 631, TXT data: ...
