It is not systemD (nor Systemd), but systemd. On high holidays you may also spell it sÿstëmd.

Re: Arch linux without Systemd

i've looked a bit into replacing systemd, and it seems to me there are 3 things that could/need to be replaced :

- the init system
- udev
- logind

there are several alternative init systems around, and also udev has been forked a few times.

replacing logind could be done by compiling polkit with specifc ./configure options to use alternative methods for authenticating.
consolekit is one of those alternatives, unix groups are another.

In short, archlinux without systemd seems doable.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Yes bad example. I was looking at logrotate and cronie which don't seem -to ignorant me at least- to be needed. At least nothing requires them on my system.

Many package require a cron daemon, and systemd does not offer the full functionality of cron. The same with logrotate: I still have log files in /var/log/ (for example, from apache) that need rotation. I guess neither of those packages is going away.

Thanks for the answer. I believe systemd will gain full crone functionality at some point and some packages will probably be made to work better with the journal log.

Re: Arch linux without Systemd

I just read (in the forums) that there are some good experiences from users running openrc with archlinux, so yes it is possible.

Socking news. That changes everything. smile

Get a blog for the links, leave dead threads alone, and accept that Arch is a systemd distribution and practically all other distributions will be (or already are) too.
