[SOLVED] Samba 4

Hey there,

looks like Samba 4 finally goes stable. smile Does Arch Linux currently have plans to update their samba package to 4.0 in the near future? Or will 3.6 remain for some time?

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] Samba 4

Arch packages the latest upstream stable releases, so you can expect samba 4 as soon as the appropriate developer(s) get the time to do it. It has already been flagged out of date.

Re: [SOLVED] Samba 4

I compiled the Samba 4.0.0 source code. Needed to tweak the python3/python2 environment since Samba wants python2. Samba-tool gives me errors on some command options, which I attribute to probably a misconfigured install.

Eagerly awaiting the Arch package, which for sure will work much more seamlessly than almost anyone could ever attempt with an independent compile. I want to get rid of our Windows Server 2012 evaluation edition (a generous 180-day trial though) test domain controller. Not really worth paying for it since I only need the authentication/authorization features and minor group policies.

Re: [SOLVED] Samba 4

I've tested samba 4 during RC by installing it via AUR on a test machine, and plan to use it as a primary domain controller for a small network. It worked pretty fine and better than I expected but i've decided to wait until it is stable and available in the extra repo. So I was just curious if there are already some information about a specific date or something. But I think its not a simple update because the maintainer has to check if migration from 3.x works flawlessly and so on, so it is perfectly ok if it will take some time. smile

It'll be ready when it hits [extra].

Note though, that release of samba4 does not mean deprecation of samba3 (whose latest version is 3.6.11 released on 21 Jan).

While I use samba only on a file server and can't confirm this, there seem to be some migration difficulties from samba 3.x to 4  for folks using active directory and domain controllers: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4/HOWTO.

So I find it unlikely that samba4 will replace 3.6 in the repos unless 3.6 branch is declared obsolescent which will not happen anytime soon as 3.5 is still maintained.
