Bad tearing in Openbox

did a fresh install with openbox. just installed xorg, alsa openbox and let the package manager pull in the dependencies. however, I am getting really bad tearing when moving or resizing windows. Didn't have the problem on my last install so I don't know what to make of it. I haven't had this kind of problem before so I don't know where to start trouble shooting. well, annoying, everything is fully functional, so just tell me what files/ packages I need to be looking at and I can provide the info.

Thanks

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

First off, what kind of video card are you using? Have you installed all of the necessary drivers? It's hard to say exactly without know what kind of setup you have, or what your openbox configuration was like before you reinstalled.

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

What video card are you using?
Are you using a compositor?

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

No compostior.
Video card is AMD HD4250 (on motherboard)
I'm using the drivers pulled in with the xorg package/ group. I've used these before in another, pretty much default openbox setup.
It's all completely default.

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

want to add- performance is fine inside the windows. its only in the managment of the window. example:

2012_12_27_182251_1280x1024_scrot.jpg

frame rate is fine when the gears are in one place. move the window, performance drops massively (40-50 FPS vs 200 FPS) I understand there should be some drop and that could be normal, but if it's not it fits with what I'm seeing when I move the windows.

You can't be using all of them. Maybe you installed them all but you can't be using them all. You need to tell us which drivers you are actually using. lsmod | grep video may prove informative.

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

I imagine that if you look in your Xorg.*.log that it would tell you.  In fact if you grep for "Device" it might be pretty easy to determine what drive you are using.  You know that it is probbaly better to only install the drive that you intend to use.  Or else have a bunch of crap that you just totally don't need.

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

lsmod says you are using the radeon module, so you are likely using the xf86-video-ati driver package which is in the xorg group.  extra/ati-dri, however, is not in the xorg group, and is probably what you are missing.

In addition to thunderogg's suspicion I find it odd that you have virtualbox modules loaded.  You claimed to have an "all completely default" setup with only those two meta-packages and their automatic dependencies installed.  You seemed to think this would be a simple question, yet throughout this thread OTHER USERS have had to reveal all the information you should have shared openly or taken the time to know yourself including what you video driver you are using (this is a step in the beginners guide).

Frankly I don't know why I helped, as your "selective honesty" and limited sharing of relevant information is just disrespectful of those you are asking for help.

as I explained at the beginning, while very annoying the install is still functional so yes, I have been using it do to what I use my computer for, including virtualbox.

Could virtualbox really be causing a problem like this? I can disable those modules to check, although I certain the problem was there before I installed virtualbox.

at the moment I am using debian, (arch is on another partition) however as this looks like a problem with X and not distro specific, I assumed it would be fine to ask here, since the debian forums tend to be slower moving. If this is a major problem, I can try to contact a mod about closing this thread. I don't mind.

and I apologize for any perceived with holding of information. It was not intended as so.

I will try ati-dri and get back on how that goes over.

Re: Bad tearing in Openbox

In hindsight I may have been a bit harsh, and I appologize for any undue 'escalation'.  But the points hold that to get help it is important that your presentation of the relevant information be as "transparent" as possible - if for no other reason than that it is easy to misinterpret intent in online forums.

I do not have any suspicion that virtualbox itself is relevant - its presence just seemed to go against some of the things you said, which made me wonder if your other claims were true.  No one likes being led down a blind alley by someone not presenting all the information up front.

As for knowing the driver, you should know that - or have been able to easily find out - prior to asking the question.  In many ways the amount of effort others will put into answering a question reflects the ammount of effort apparent in the preparation and construction of the question.

Does the problem occur when you boot Arch or only Debian or both? If it is a problem you see in Arch, that's obviously appropriate but if you only see it in Debian, you should not be asking here. For one thing, it is likely to get extremely confusing and you are not likely to get great advice. Package names differs as do boot processes, configuration etc. etc.
