Mounted CIFS shares timing out

I have a few CIFS mounts on my system during the day that periodically time out and appear to be disconnected. I cannot unmount them, as umount -t cifs -a just locks up (however a reboot will take care of it).

CIFS VFS: Server fakename has not responded in 120 seconds. Reconnecting...

This wasn't a problem until recently (last month or two). I mount these manually by calling entries in fstab. When mounted the shares work as they should, however the disconnect is becoming a headache for applications that depend on the mount points.

Some system specs:
cifs-utils 5.8-1
Linux fakehost 3.7.1-3-ck #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 20 17:59:35 EST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The servers of the mounted shares are Windows Server 2008, XP, and Windows 7 boxes (problem appears to not discriminate).

Any help is greatly appreciated,

EDIT:

I should point out the force option appears to work- however this doesn't address the time out problem.

Re: Mounted CIFS shares timing out

It appears this usually happens after inactivity for most servers but it cannot successfully reconnect when it retries (cifs-utils bug?). Other servers disconnect right after mounting- not sure why.

Re: Mounted CIFS shares timing out

I mount some cifs shares (on XP and 2k3 mostly, occasionally 2k8) from 'noauto' fstab entries. In most cases I don't keep them mounted for more than a few hours. The only issues I've had is when I forget to unmount them before shutting down.

Re: Mounted CIFS shares timing out

At home it's not a problem for the 3 mounts I have, but that is to a Samba server. Guessing it's something to do with Windows, if I keep files open the time outs don't happen.
