KDE's total annoyance [solved after all!!!:-D]

Hello Forum.

I'm new to Arch Linux. I just quit Gentoo a few days ago because this neverending story of some wrong Configs during installation made me crazy.
So I decided to try out Arch and I must say, I really liked it - just until the moment it came to installing kdebase!!!!
First of all, there is no useful KDE-Installation guide for Arch that reminds you of all these tiny little things you have to do to get it working (those things, ex-gnome-users as me don't know yet). I had to figure out by myself, that ivman must be installed as well (and not only hal and dbus).
Second, after some more burned nerves, I also figured out, that "dbus hal ivman" must be written in exactly that order in rc.conf, as Arch doesn't seem to know in which order to start the daemons. Otherwise hal won't start.
Third: This "startkde"-command cited everywhere actually doesn't start KDE, X always returns an error about not finding displays or so. I have to run "kdm" as root in order to start it (adding "exec:kdm" in ./xinitrc doesn't help here) ...
But OK, all those could be fixed. Now my REAL problem is this:
Once logged in into this nice somewhat preconfigured KDE, the configuration assistant pops up ... an finishes properly. But that's the last thing that works. Every application I start (be it Konqueror, Kcontrol or even HelpCenter) causes the system to completly freeze - exept the mouse. I can move the mouse, but the GUI is totally frozen. I can't even change into VT to restart KDE or so - the keyboard doesn't respond at all (even numlock doesn't react). I can just turn power of and pray, the filesystem doesn't get damaged.:(

I'm really desperate: I didn't find any hints about something like this anywhere on the net. And the most astonishing is, that I already had exactly the same sometimes happening on my Gentoo, after I had - NOTE THIS - upgraded to GNOME 2.12. Actually that was one of the main reasons for me leaving Gentoo and Gnome ... and now I find it here again, under Arch Linux and KDE!!! :S

Can someone PLEEASE help!?

Firstly, ivman is only needed outside of KDE/GNOME (those have their own volume managers).

Secondly, since the dawn of ages I have started kdm through inittab (starting it as a /etc/rc.d daemon is also an option).

Finally, I never had a problem like the one you described. Peculiar. Do twm works properly? Maybe your X config is somehow wrong. Getting rid of whole .kde is often a solution of different KDE problems, but probably not in this case, as there's nothing much accumulated there yet ;-)

As for praying for the consistency of your filesystem, maybe magic sysrq would work in that case. If you're using stock Arch kernel, it's enough to set it on in /etc/systcl.conf and then pressing alt+printscreen+['s', then 'u', then 'b']. It bypasses the keyboard driver and goes directly to kernel, so it often works when whole box is unresponsive.

Twm starts properly.
And as I said, KDE also seems to start properly, but then its spirit wanders to nirvana if I start thinking about launching kcontrol. I also deleted all what's in ~/.kde ... but that didn't solve the problem. I'll just try it with a new user ... perhaps it works.
Question: Must a user be in some specific groups in order to be able to use KDE properly???

Thanks for the tip. As I sad, I didn't set up KDE ever before (just used it occasionally under Knoppix, as I am doing now ...)

Nah, there isn't any KDE-specific group. Your user should be in audio group to be able to use audio devices and so on.

Ok, the new user has the same problem ... the moment I launch Kcontrol, the system freezes. Anyway I found out that some things work. (The menu bar configuration works, opening a folder in konqueror via this quick launch thing  in the K-Menu also works)

The thing that did not work is you trick with Alt+Print+ (s then u then b) ... simply that didn't have any effect although I have this line in /etc/sysctl.conf

It was basically done with hwd -x ... I just changed a few settings in it, perhaps someone can find an error in it.

i havent done a X by hwd i always use 

 xorgconfig

using the out put from 1st running 

hwd -e  
hwd -s 
hwd -h

the hwd -h gives a good help tips on setting things up

Change that kernel.sysrq value to 1 and execute 'sysctl -p' to enable that magic ;-)

Also, remove the 'Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"' from xorg.conf.
It won't actually solve your problems, but this option stops people from changing to virtual consoles.

Lastly, small question: do you have more kde group's elements installed (pacman -S kde) or only kdebase/kdelibs?

I got the magic keys working now. But my problem still presists. It seems that has something to do with Konqueror. I don't know wether kcontrol is basically also konqueror, but KWrite, Kate and the "Tip of the day"-wizard at the beginning seem to work normally. I also already disabled DRI (noticed that after I read my finished post), but it didn't help. I managed to open a webpage through konqueror by opening it first as a file browser and then entering a web address. But the momen the Cookie dialog appeard it froze again.
And: No, I only installed kdebase!

After playing around in KDE a little, my problem still presists. It seems that it's a problem somewhere in X. Most programs work very smooth (Kopete, kWallet, the Menu Bar, Konqueror even opens in file manager mode. I even opened some webpages when launches from an external link (from Kopete). What is really intresting is that all these programs won't be launched from Knsole:

Edit: What might also be intresting is that I can't change the colour sheme of Konsole - neither to plain colours nor to a transperent background. Even if I change it to an already existing sheme he simply won't apply it ...

If you've got a nForce2 motherboard installed this link may help you: http://atlas.et.tudelft.nl/verwei90/nforce2/index.html. I get the same lockups sometimes with two different nForce2 mainboards, it mainly happens when I use the onboard NIC to transfer huge amounts of data. But it happens so rarely that I never cared about fixing it. Anyway, it seems to be a common problem with this motherboards. Try searching Google for combinations of the keywords "nforce2", "noapic" and "lockup" for more information about what exactly the problem is.

you have an authority problem....

remove ~/.Xauthority
and ~/.ICEauthority
try xhost +
and double check you /etc/host file

these are the most likely cause

Yes, this looks like an Xauthority problem. From your rc.conf it seems that you have a fixed ip address and your hostname is einstein. Check that /etc/hosts contains a line like 

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain einstein localhost

and do the things mpie suggested (although probably not xhost +, that's unsecure).

sorry my bad, that was only half a post really, if it works once you have done xhost+, then logged in you then need to do xhost-, as it will accept all connectins untill you do... :shock:

Curiosity makes me ask the original poster: did you do a full system upgrade (pacman -Syu) after install? (with all the tweaks required by the new packages)

Also, I find adding "kdm" to the "DAEMONS=(...)" list in /etc/rc.conf the "most Arch-way solution" - kdm is a daemon, isn't it?

Of course I did a complete system upgrade directly after installing the base system (I had actually the impression that downloading the Installation CD was a waste of time, as nearly all packages were upgraded) ....

The way I did is starting kdm via inittab as lucke had suggested. Is there any difference when started from rc.conf?

But now the sad thing: I still have the problem ... although I followed all your advices, changed /ect/hosts, deleted ~/.Xauthority and ~/.ICEauthority and although I built a completly new Vanilla-Kernel (2.6.14) with similar options as I had them under Gentoo, and WITHOUT "apic"-Support ...
smoon, you were right, I really have an ABit Motherboard with nForce2 Chipset, but the new Kernel also didn't help solving anything.
The funny point about the matter is actually that Konqueror runs - but only if started with a concrete target (konqueror /xxx). I gets stuck only if started from the panel or from the k-Menu (ergo without any target). And it freezes (exactly as Firefox did under Gentoo) when it is under heavy stress, ie. if I switch from one loading tab to another while 5 other tabs are opend.

I really don't know what to do!!! Do you think rebuilding all kde Packages with "abs" would help? Or is there some Kernel patch out there that might help on newer Kernels (all I found were quite old ones!). Or am I just damned and have to go on and test on distro after another until I find something that REALLY works???

I tried around for hours, kept on browsing the internet in text-mode even longer ... and in the end I just had forgotten the advice given in THIS thread:

TURN OFF "RENDER ACCEL"!!!!

As far as I can see right now, every thing goes fine, after turning off this option in xorg.conf. I aslo discovered that I'm not the only one to suffer from this as you can see in this HUGE thread

Only problem left at the moment is telling Konsole to change it's background color ...
But anyway: Thank you all for your assistance! I hope I now can deeper into ArchLinux.

I really don't think this has something to do with your software (Distribution, KDE version, ...). Have you tried disabling the CPU disconnect function in your BIOS with or without some combinations of the noapic, acpi=off and nolapic kernel options? I don't think it's done with just upgrading to the latest kernel.
