Login Problems with gnome

Hi,

I have a Problem that I restarted my arch and after reboot i typed my pw in and then a message comes up:

"oh no! something has gone wrong. a problem has occurred and the system cannot recover."

and it will retry or reboot.. the problem is that this doesn't help.

I've googled a lot and searched here in the forum and wiki and some people have nearly the same problem, but no solution really works for me sad

here is my :0-greeter.log:

Could you also post your Xorg log?

Re: Login Problems with gnome

I can't see any problem in the logs. Anyone?
Is there a possibility that this has something to do with the locales?

€: oh, sorry for doublepost. wanted to edit :-/

Re: Login Problems with gnome

There are no relevant errors in your XOrg log, and it exitted without errors.  The problem is either in your display manager or your DE.

Start experimenting to narrow down which is the problem: start a different wm with xinit from a tty.  If that works it will confirm the problem is either the DM or DE.  Then start gnome shell via xinit from a tty to determine which one it is.

Re: Login Problems with gnome

thank you for your help smile.

a little bit embarrassing, but actually I don't know how to start a different wm with xinit from a tty hmm
is there a key-combination to abort normal starting because it goes directly to the login screen where I can login with user name and pw?
I did this some time ago but can't remember how and couldn't find information on this.

and when I'm in the shell, i just install another wm with pacman? what then? I'm a little bit overwhelmed with that hmm

Re: Login Problems with gnome

You can follow the beginners guide on how to install twm to test X.  You may need to switch to a tty and disable/stop your display manager with `systemctl stop <DMname>`.  More information on that last part can be found in the wiki page for whatever display manager you are using - I have never used any, so I can't give better info than that.

EDIT: bear in mind someone with experience with gnome-shell may be able to identify the problem much eaiser - I'm just going through a step-by-step process of elimination to narrow it down.  Gnome's "Oh no..." messages are ridiculously useless, so I'm hoping you can replicate the problem in a context that will give more useful error output.

Re: Login Problems with gnome

If you like awesome, you can always stick with it - but my goal is not to find replacements, rather to just test to pinpoint the problem.

AwesomeWM running successfully just means we can rule out any XOrg or X configuration problems.  This leaves two suspects: gdm or gnome itself.

Did you start awesome from a tty with startx/xinit?  If so, two follow up tests to do: 1) try to start gnome from xinitrc, 2) try to start awesome from gdm.

Re: Login Problems with gnome

Yes I've switched to a tty and started awesome with startx (previously I put in "exec awesome" to xinitrc of course).
Your solution 1 to start gnome from xinitrc is like the same right? I've done this already by putting some commands for gnome to xinitrc and did startx then. same problem..

when system boots and I can type password.. I can choose now between awesome and gnome. When I choose awesome, it logs normally in but when I choose gnome, it fails again.

€: also awesome-gnome works..

Re: Login Problems with gnome

This seems to clearly implicate gnome-shell as the problem.  When you did 1) (started gnome from a tty with startx) it failed and returned you to the tty, right?  Were there any errors listed in the output there?

Re: Login Problems with gnome

when I started gnome from tty using startx I doesn't go directly back to tty.. it says like the "oh no.."-bullshiterrormessage and a button to "login again".. and no there were no errors or any other output :-/

Re: Login Problems with gnome

awesome, this solution works. now I only have to work out, which of the applications crash at startup.. is there an easier way to find out which one crashes than activate one and reboot?

Re: Login Problems with gnome

Perhaps, but I don't know it as I don't use that at all.

But if you post the list of which applications are there I or someone else here might spot one of the "usual suspects" that may be causing a problem.

Re: Login Problems with gnome

Just in case anyone googles and hits this thread, the solution is:

1. Start a different window manager like twm
2. In a terminal, type gnome-session-properties
3. Scroll through the list until you see an entry titled "GSettings Data Conversion"
4. Uncheck the box to disable this program from starting upon Gnome launch
5. Reboot

I was getting the behavior described above 1-3 times after a reboot when I tried to log in.  Specifically, I would reboot and the next 1-3 login attempts would generate the "Oh No..." message and kick me back out to GDM. Eventually Gnome would start successfully if i kept logging in.  After disabling the startup of GSettings Data Conversion I am now in good shape.
