So here's the short of it: how can I get a version of 'cp' that has a progress bar.
Gentoo's version has this as an (undocumented) feature accessible with the -g switch. I find the progress bar immensely useful when I'm copying large files onto usb drives, or across a network, or even really large files from one HD to another. Essentially any time the copy is going to take a little while, I like to have an idea of how long it'll take, and how much it's done so far.
So?

Doesn't seem to work. Just sits there not copying anything, with the time counting up. Too bad though, looks like a cool program.

Oh iBertus gave me the answer. That's the patch that gentoo must have automatically applied. I'm just scared about patching my coreutils.

Don't be scared, even if you break it (which you probably won't) then just reboot from the Arch install CD (or Archie) and reinstall coreutils ![]()

What I don't understand: On the link iBertus cited, they're talking about patching "fileutils" .. while there are not fileutills in the Arch repos. So shall I just download, patch and install fileutils manually, or must I remove "coreutils" from the system before I do so? Or shall I apply the patch to "coreutils"???

Gentoo's fileutils are the equivilent of Arch's coreutils, so you want to patch the coreutils package.

Doesn't seem to want to patch. Must be a weird gentoo thing.
