[SOLVED] Network Manager isn't connecting to my wireless network.

I am trying to move from netcfg to Network Manager. I have installed packages mentioned here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … orkManager and here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … nager#XFCE . I am a sudoer with no password requirement. Network Manager found my network, asked for its security key and trying to connect but fails everytime. I think it can't get an ip address. I have also created /etc/dhclient.conf with this in it;

interface "wlp3s3" {
send dhcp-client-identifier MYMACADDRESS;
}

as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … P_problems . I don't remember modifying anything else. What can I do about this?

Do you use the network manager applet? If so I would suggest clicking on it and go to Edit Connections and entering your password for the network under the security settings. When connecting to a network for the first time using Network Manager you need to do this I found. You can probably use the cli package instead of the applet if you prefer.

I use network manager applet and my password is there.

Either something serious is going on, or it's something simple like you forgot to disable any conflicting units related to netcfg (hopefully Occam's Razor holds here).

"Fails to connect everytime" is not very good info.

Also, you say you have a dhclient.conf but did you set NewtorkManager up to actually use dhclient? I A fairly certain that it will use dhcpcd by default.

I didn't set NetworkManager to use dhclient because I didn't know I was supposed to. I have my laptop here with me, I don't know what do you need to know but I can provide whatever information you need.

LOAD   = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.

I use nncli so I am totally unsure about his this is done via nmapplet. But it being a GUI, click the icon and start going through the options.

(Actually lately I have been very happily using netctl) If you don't mind me asking, why are you switching (or trying to anyway)? I kind of see network management as something that you use and then just kind of forget about til something goes awry. If you are looking for a real GUI option, have you checked out WICD? I used WICD for quite a while, and it works pretty darn well (a lit less dependencies as well).

I will be moving this laptop around. I want it to find and connect available networks automatically.

I don't think you will have any problems with wicd for roaming, it is very similar in ease of use as NetworkManager, actually I think it might be easier.

Networkmanager uses dhclient by default by the way. It's easy to configure that to test both

man networkmanager.conf

For your error, maybe journalctl reveals more after a failing connect with it.
Does the connect still work with netcfg now while it won't with NMapplet?

Solved: Not sure how, but I was tampering with settings and after a reboot it started to connect. Thanks for your time.
