rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

Hi guys,
I'm having a problem with my Xorg configuration at the moment and I am tired of messing with it so I figured I would ask for some help after not being able to track down a fix on my own.

As of this moment I am running a stock xorg.conf file provided by Xorg :0 -configure:

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "X.org Configured"
	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
	InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
	InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"

	FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
	FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/OTF/"
	FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
	FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
	FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"

	Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

The problem is that with this configuration no screens are found.  I had tracked down a fix for this earlier in the day but now managed to forget the exact solution after hours of messing around.  I remember that it entailed removing the various screen subsections, removing BUSID from under Device and adding an option under Device but I cannot for the life of me remember which option that was.
Anyway,  this tweaked configuration allowed for me to see my login screen but left me without the ability to use my keyboard or usb mouse.  At this point I'm stumped and frustrated so I turn to you guys for some help.

Here is my Xorg.0.log:

I have tried both of the Nvidia and Xorg configuration tools and neither one gives me a configuration which works properly.  Additionally, I had to configure my Synaptics touchpad to work as that did not work previously either due to the fact that there was nothing in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
Don't know if it matters but the card is an Nvidia 8400M GS

I don't know what happened with my configuration but I'd love to be able to get this fixed.
Thank you!

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

You don't need *any* configuration for nvidia. All you need is the evdev and synaptics files. If you deleted them, reinstall the packages that ship them, which would be xorg-server and xf86-input-synaptics.

Thanks for the reply Gusar, I'm going to try that. I tried reinstalling xf86-input-synaptics and xf86-input-evdev but haven't attempted xorg-server yet.  Will update with results.

E: wow, and it was that simple! It didn't dawn on me to reinstall xorg-server.  Thank you so much.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

It seems that I spoke too soon.  The configuration was working fine last night and today but then it reminded me as to the reason I started digging into the xorg configuration in the first place.  The graphics started becoming all wonky and jittery from time to time and the computer slowed down immensely.  It would take upwards of a minute to switch between windows.  I didn't have a chance to check cpu or memory usage but after I had rebooted I could no longer boot into kde.

I have deleted my xorg.conf file and was just running the standard configuration.

Here is my Xorg.0.log:

E: Seems that the configuration is very sporadic.  During some bootups it works fine and other times it doesn't.  It doesn't look to be the video card itself as the system runs graphics perfectly fine on various livecds.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

Logs aren't that hard to read. These two lines are easy to see in there:

[ 17.962875] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x25:0xffffffff:1072)
[ 17.962885] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

Google those. If you can't find anything, post at the nvidia forums: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/linux/ <- make sure to read the stickies there and provide the full bug report as they describe.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

I agree, logs aren't that hard to read which is why I noted that I could not track down a fix and posted here.
Oh well, guess I need to post this over at the nvidia board instead.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

Bump to reflect title change.  Posted over at the nvidia board with little success so far.

EDIT:
Update: For  now it seems like I might have solved the problem.  Removed linux, linux-header, linux-firmware, nvidia, nvidia-utils, and Xorg-server packages then reinstalled linux packages, then nvidia and xorg-server packages and used the standard nvidia-xconfig xorg.conf configuration. Seems to be working fine for the time being and have not come into any problems in the last day or so, but we shall see.

EDIT2:
Just my luck.  As soon as I submitted the update, I noticed that I was missing xf86-input-synaptics.  After installing it, I'm back to square one.  So it seems (at least to my uneducated mind) that this is either synaptics configurations clashing with nvidia drivers or synaptics and evdev clashing with one another and nvidia drivers.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console
on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver
requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console
drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in
corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.

Is the output message I keep running into in dmesg when the system is running so the issue of graphics not working after installing must be pure coincidence.  It's very strange though because I have never had a problem with my configuration prior.  Is there any way to run a vga console with 1280x800 resolution and not have to run noveau?

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

Nope. It's either nouveau or (u)vesafb. A lot of people use (u)vesafb successfully with nvidia, but as that message says, it's not a supported configuration.

Re: rm_init_adapter(0) failed errors cause xserver not to launch

Don't know what the hell is going on but this is driving me nuts.  I tried vesafb and it didn't make a difference.  Backed up my home partition and started from scratch, didn't even restore any of my settings and am experiencing the same problems.  Going to try nouveau and if that doesn't work then I guess it's back to Windows for me. Shame.

E: Screen cannot be found with nouveau.

Mods please move this topic to multimedia.  Hoping to find more results there.
Thank you.
