Tor working timeout with privoxy

Hi,

I just installed privoxy for use with tor. I installed it and added forward-socks5 / localhost:9050 . to the config file as described in the wiki. However when pointing firefox at 127.0.0.1 8118 it just times out.

Tor is working fine and the privoxy service is started in systemd. The privoxy log file is empty though.

I've tried changing the config file to socks4a changing it to my hostname "laptop" and 127.0.0.1 nothing works.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

That should work just fine (I use privoxy all the time and started tor extra for you right now btw). The only thing: you have to add 127.0.0.1 to the "No Proxy for" field, if you want to point your browser to privoxy directly, use:http://config.privoxy.org/
Otherwise you get an empty response for localhost.

If it does not work still, check "systemctl status tor" for an established circuit.

edit: correction of privoxy localhost url

Thanks but I realised shortly after posting. Privoxy is a http proxy not a socks proxy. I didnt even think to check what type it was.  Its made tor a hell of a lot quicker then using it directly though which is nice.

Re: Tor working timeout with privoxy

No worries. I use it because it makes everything quicker, not only tor. Particularly "flash intensive" academic papers.
Give "polipo" a try with tor.

Wow thanks for that. I've set up polipo -> privoxy -> tor and its actually quicker than connecting directly even though its through tor!

Re: Tor working timeout with privoxy

That result I find striking, I would not expect such speed on a regular basis ;-) It has been a while I have used tor, but I am sure you still can't expect it to find blazingly fast nodes for the circuit each time. Also it's good to remember checking that the tor circuit is used when testing it.
Instinctively, I would have chained privoxy -> polipo -> tor, but your chain is better cause it caches only what arrives in the browser.

Good you got it to work anyway. Consider marking your thread solved by editing the thread title.
