[SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Hello All,

after several months of trouble-free operation, my main system started having issues with detecting my second monitor properly. I am quite sure that this has something to do with the latest nvidia driver (313.18) but since I don't use this machine daily, I can't say exactly.

First, what's the problem? I have an nVidia GTX 460 card with two 26" TFTs @1920x1200 attached. No special configuration file has been necessary for some time now (everything detected automatically as needed). Now the main display (the left of two screens) is working as usual while the right one is limited to an 800x600 resolution. I've already tried several approaches to manually configure this one as intended but so far without success. nvidia-settings won't allow me to set any resolution other than Auto and is also weirdly showing the second display as DFP-3 whereas I think it used to be DFP-1 (following DFP-0 which is still active). A hardware issue can be eliminated as everything is smooth using an Ubuntu bootable CD which uses nouveau by default.

Here's the Xorg.0.log with a clean configuration (i. e. no /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf)

As you can see, the EDID information cannot be obtained from the second display. Since I haven't found any indication of this being a bug in the latest nVidia driver, I wanted to ask whether you have come across any hints or explanations.

For the time being, I can live with it but I'm actually considering moving to nouveau instead now.

Thanks for your time. Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Has no one encountered similar issues? I have switched to nouveau now and besides a sometimes noticeably degraded performance everything is working as it should. Any pointers will be appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

I had a very similar problem some time ago. I "fixed" it by setting an option to ignore EDID checksum. But it is probably better to manually set all your display stuff up in xorg.conf. The checksum is there for a reason.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140496
(see post #11 for driver option)

I'm surprised that switching to a different driver helped. It seems the EDID data of your display isn't really damaged.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

No, quite certainly it isn't. As I wrote in my initial post: The issue came up with one of the latest nvidia packages (313.18). Ten days ago, all EDID information was perfectly valid and usable. Thanks for sharing that link with me. I haven't really gotten down to manually configuring Xorg but it seems that'd be the only solution right now.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Just a little push to say that this issue still persists. As I have found out by now, it really seems to be the nvidia driver. The same problems comes up on a test install of Fedora and Ubuntu (using the proprietary driver). Seems like I will need to take the time to go the manual Xorg way though I'd rather nvidia fixed their issues. hmm

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Have you tried using a custom EDID?
I'm having similar issues with cropped screen and small resolution with my monitor when I'm not using an EDID with disabled extensions.

http://analogbit.com/fix_nvidia_edid

I exported my EDID and used:
$ ./edid_disable_exts --to-dvi [input_file] [output_file]
The program can be found on the website.

To make a new one and reference it in xorg.conf.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

I think I'll try that on the weekend. As of now, I have been able to force the nvidia driver (now 313.30) to accept custom resolutions by defining a horizontal sync rate and inserting a modeline entry (either of those changes alone didn't help). However, these customisations only take effect when you also use

Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNonEdidModes"

For some reason this vital setting is scarcely mentioned when dealing with custom resolutions.

The only trouble that remains is that I haven't been able to get the driver to accept the default configuration that I have defined in 10-monitor.conf. It will now start up using 1024x768 on both displays - but at least I can then manually switch to 1920x1200 using nvidia-settings. Perhaps the custom EDID solution will work better ...

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Alright, though it still bothers me that for some reason the nvidia driver no longer correctly reads and processes EDID information on all connectors, supplying DFP-0's EDID to DFP-3 via the "CustomEDID" option fixed all woes. 1920x1200 is now again detected as default, TwinView is enabled and so on ... even without a sophisticated 10-monitor.conf:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "GeForce GTX 460"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-3:/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/edid.bin"
EndSection

Everything else remains at default and works. Perhaps this post will also help others in dealing with nvidia issues.

One thing this has taught me though is: As much inclined as I am towards open source software, the nouveau driver is really still a long way off the performance of the proprietary nvidia module. If you want/need to work seriously in 3D, there's no alternative.

Re: [SOLVED] EDID read invalid with nvidia-313.18

Almost five years later, I finally got around to replacing my gfx card with a more recent model (GTX 10 series) and guess what?! The issue described here still exists, so contrary to my previous assumption that it might just be a quirk of my dated GTX 460, it seems to be rather inherent in the nvidia gfx driver. More so, I have exactly the same issue when (yes, I know, I should not openly admit this) running MS Windows with the associated nvidia driver. (This was actually the first and definitely the last time in 10+ years running Windows natively on my machine.) Thank you, nvidia. :-/
