X11forwarding and ssh

My college professor wrote a java program to be used over my college's server. Using the ssh -X... command, I could get to the file and run it; however, after the GUI popped up, I could not select any text within the file. Using the ssh -Y... command, I could run the program just fine and I could also run it on my own system after using scp to copy it over. I still do not know why this is the case (or how to fix it), but my question is this:

How unsecure is the -Y extension compared to the -X?

I am actually somewhat confused about the whole thing. The man pages indicate that the -X extension could be more harmful than the -Y, but the internet consensus is the opposite.

In addition, could anyone describe what the security features actually are and what they do?

Thanks in advance!
